Admin should have stepped in. Also a sniper should operate on his own most of the time, but I guess on a map like Kashan a squadleader might embrace a sniper in his squad, although usually marksman does the trick.

I see what you're saying, but I'm confident in my ability to not be a numpy; and so far I've not experienced what you describe.TheLean wrote:Going in solo sniper in Al Basra city is like giving the insurgents a sniper kit.
Compared to most of my squaddies (sorry T&T!) when engaging in a firefight it tends to be myself that survives whilst everyone else dies; and more often than not I'm able to make away from the area undetected and regroup with the re-spawned squad without having to die, myself.
There have been a few occasions where myself, and my learned armour gunner (element) have found our armour-piece destroyed/immobile right on the front line/behind enemy lines, and we have made it all the way back to base on foot without being detected.
I guess what I'm trying to say inbetween giving myself a massive bl000000wjewb is that when it gets hairy out there, I seem to have a knack for knowing when and how to retreat without arousing suspicion (or myself

Better yet, the squad leader (Or someone with an officer kit) should only be able to request kits.. since squad leaders are the ones that usually know what the hell they're doing.
Also, sniper squads only work properly if there is a commander. Snipers are for recon, spotting enemy positions / firebases / vehicles, and long range fire support.
Also, you can tell if a sniper squad is the "1337 lone wolf" squad if they either both have sniper kits, or one has a marksman and the other has a sniper. Marksmen =/= Snipers.

Sniper squads work best when they are relaying information, slowing enemy movement, calling in CAS or Area Attack and so on.
Doing this may mean that the sniper squad get less "kills" as a whole, but they will greatly aid the success of the team!

All Snipers should operate with a spotter. No excuses such as "But I'm l33t".Heskey wrote:I see what you're saying, but I'm confident in my ability to not be a numpy; and so far I've not experienced what you describe.

You're right there is not an excuse such as that; but there is:Herbiie wrote:All Snipers should operate with a spotter. No excuses such as "But I'm l33t".![]()
1.) Since issuing snipers with GLTD's, spotters really aren't necessary.
2.) I wouldn't like to sit there for a full round looking through a pair of 'nocks, so I don't expect anyone else to, either!

Re: Sniper Squads- call it a day!
Well, they should IRL, but the way PR portrays the kit makes it often not worth having the extra silhouette. I mean, would you really take an extra 3% of your team away that can't add anything to your role that you can't already do? It's the same with having a cupola gunner in a tank. Sure, it's near impossible to operate without one and live long on certain maps, but on most they're just not worth it.Herbiie wrote:All Snipers should operate with a spotter. A sniper squad is useful if it informs the team on the enemy and shoots medics and officers as their fisrst priority.

Re: Sniper Squads- call it a day!
what about spotters for protection?
i used sniper kit for first time yesterday on TG (as people know, i HATE snipers... actually hate, to many bad experiences) on fallujah, i had the rifle he had officer kit, and he was kept busy alot when moving to positions he would take the lead. he also had to kill numerous people. and when in position he was very vocal on VoIP spotting targets etc.

Gazz sniping :O *feints*
But On topic, im sure you can only request 1 sniper in a squad. So what they were trying was mainly because of them not being allowed to request a second kit.

You don't relocate? Man you're not a good sniper - surprised the enemy don't spot you.Heskey wrote:You're right there is not an excuse such as that; but there is:

I've played as a spotter before - I set rallies and I looked through my GTLD so the sniper can keep his rifle out all the time and reduce deviation. While we were changing position I would scout the area first with the sniper covering the rear.
I've been through many rounds without losing a single sniper kit this way.

Re: Sniper Squads- call it a day!
While we are on the subject of IRL use of snipers vs ingame we should talk about relocating as well. Everybody says to do it frequently, but I find that it is when I move to relocate that I die. Maybe the "rules" of sniping IRL doesnt really apply to PR. Reasons for that could be the lack of undergrowth on larger view distances or because we are too impatient to crawl 500 meters ingame.
Edit: A spotter to protect when relocating is good of course, but almost nobody is willing to be spotter in pub as it is kind of boring to most likely never fire a single shot during a round.

You don't have to die - just have to be clever, getting your spotter to clear out the area in front and then moving keeping in a ditch/behind a ridge all the time.TheLean wrote:While we are on the subject of IRL use of snipers vs ingame we should talk about relocating as well. If you get a spotter to clear anything out then you've failed the mission and should RTB or find yourself dead soon.Herbiie wrote:You don't have to die - just have to be clever, getting your spotter to clear out the area in front and then moving keeping in a ditch/behind a ridge all the time.

Re: Sniper Squads- call it a day!
Any squad can be a pain in the ***. Any squad that wants a certain asset/kit regardless of the current battle situation can hinder the game as they try to obtain said equipment instead of fulfilling the role that the team currently needs.Lindahl wrote:This confirmes by big hate towards snipers. Normally they dont bother me but sometimes they could be a real pain in the ***.
So, what's to stop a n00b from being an officer before they request any other kit? This will not solve the problem. (not that I see a problem anyway) Players, as we all know are hardcoded.Dev1200 wrote:Better yet, the squad leader (Or someone with an officer kit) should only be able to request kits.. since squad leaders are the ones that usually know what the hell they're doing.
Wrong. Mumble FTW.Dev1200 wrote:Also, sniper squads only work properly if there is a commander.
"1337 lone wolf" "both have sniper kits" Contradiction much? How're sniper squads supposed to operate? In a 6 man squad? As a pair? On their own? There are many ways of running a sniper or recon squad, each has its benefits and downfalls. It all depends on the map and current situation.Dev1200 wrote:Also, you can tell if a sniper squad is the "1337 lone wolf" squad if they either both have sniper kits, or one has a marksman and the other has a sniper. Re: Sniper Squads- call it a day!
On our Crazy *** uFear server, sniper kit is not considered to be a team asset. We treat it just like any other limited kit (AT, medic or AR) and we don't require sniper to be in the squad name. So squad named sniper would have no priority over anyone else with the sniper kit. Second, it is the best to ignore server chat, most of the time it is just a meaningless drivel that has nothing to do with game and just detract from it. I would not however kick anyone for it, I would suggest to stop typing and start playing thou to participants. The only time I would kick for chat, is if it start getting offensive.
