Interchange JDAM to artillery and vice versa
I think JDAM should be replaced with artillery strike on maps where it's available and give JDAM to maps where there is artillery option at the moment.
This because I've seen arty strikes being used as weapons cache removing tool on urban areas way too often. Using artillery on build up areas, which are still occupied by unarmed civilians, would cause enormous collateral damage to people and to infrastructure in real life - something that is totally unacceptable by public community. JDAM as a lazer & gps guided smart bomb is much more preferable weapon in those situations. I would like to see references of artillery usage in real life coalition vs. insurgent city engagements. Anyone?
On the other hand, on AAS & C&C maps artillery would be way better tool for clearing out enemy fortifications or objectives as its usually takes only one well-placed arty strike to wipe out everything around target area for good, whereas JDAM, even it's spectacular show to watch, is more bark than bite. Also on these kind of engaments the infrastructure is of much less consern as it's full blown war anyway, not just some oil... err.. people liberation mission with a hint of crusade of democracy.
Edit:
Please see my assets reward suggestion here:

I would suggest EVERYONE lay off the area attack suggestions until we all get to sample .9's new area attacks.
If you watched the highlights you would see there is a major change to the artillery and im sure lots of changes to the JDAM.
I think right now is more of a wait n see time.

I've seen that highlights video. Looks like new artillery strike is even more devastating than the current one. Drop that into downtown of a crowded Iraq city with lots of civilians and you've became a mass murderer.boilerrat wrote:I would suggest EVERYONE lay off the area attack suggestions until we all get to sample .9's new area attacks.

As some of you might have noticed, I'm not saying anything about these weapons per se, but how they are used against different types of enemies.
Current system: JDAM's are used in full-blown war maps (AAS, C&C) and artillery strikes are used against insurgents and unarmed civilians (Insurgency maps).
My suggestion: JDAM's are used in insurgency maps to reduce collateral damage and civilian victims. Artillery is used in full-blown war maps to wipe out everything in target area wihtout fear of collateral damage.
See the difference?

i see the idea but then Jdam's would need to be smaller as ATM they are huge explotions meant to be more devestating than the artillary strike

Not necessarily. Even JDAM is huge explosion, it's still only one explosion in the relatively small area. Artillery strike, on the other hand, consists of 60 seconds long barrage of 105 mm shells, with total of 24 explosions if I counted correclty, and will cover much larger area.killonsight95 wrote: but then Jdam's would need to be smaller as ATM they are huge explotions meant to be more devestating than the artillary strike
Due to its pin-point accuracy, coalition could have JDAM area attack available more often, like after 15 minutes reload time, so they could use it more freely against various targets on insurgency maps. For example, many JDAM videos on youtube show how it's used against single insurgent/taliban sniper hiding in a abandoned building.

Artillery is used in an urban setting as well. It was used in operation phantom fury.

Well, if u replace the mortars with JDAM on insurgency, well, u would make the game less realistic. Most coalition outposts have a few mortars to provide indirect fire support. I don't think that any outpost would have a runway, with the exception of Al Basrah. While fast air(ur JDAM) can be called, the Air Force is usually resilient and would not aprove a bombing raid in a urban area. Mortars, while not so precise, are the prefered form of indirect fire support that both insurgents and coalition use.

what about I believe the patriot rocket system?? the MLRS is supposed to negate collateral damage... b/c it's missiles are set up in a bunker buster pattern... meaning they don't explode until they enter the intended target....

First, the MIM-104 "Patriot" missile system is very different from the M270 MLRS. Second, the MLRS does NOT negate damage compared to howitzer artillery.sylent/shooter wrote:what about I believe the patriot rocket system?? the MLRS is supposed to negate collateral damage... b/c it's missiles are set up in a bunker buster pattern... meaning they don't explode until they enter the intended target....
The M270 doesn't fire conventional HE warheads, it primarily is used to deploy ICM/DPICM or other "smart" munitions such as SADARM, BATS, etc. The MLRS generally feasts on large clusters of vehicles or troops, not individual precision targets.
The MLRS is also not in any manner set up for "bunker buster" operations. It doesn't have any capability to employ a warhead designed for hardened structures, as noted above. And their deploy pattern varies depending on both the known target and the munitions being used, with the sheaf or dispersion pattern being more open and wide due to the distances at which the rockets are fired from. Even with modern precision, these unguided rockets can have unprecise impacts due to all sorts of variances such as weather.
And I have never seen the M270 deployed in an urban environment, it would not be effective.
Something to point out is that artillery and JDAM strikes are being modified, so I'll wait until after the new changes are made live (public) before commenting on any changes that need to be made with their employment.
