Combine the Colored Smokes

Post by Startrekern »

I'm curious if this is possible, but I believe it is:

Why not combine the colored smokes in the Officer Kit? Green/Purple on one slot, and right click throws the purple, with left throwing the green.

While I know that this would remove the ability to 'drop' the smoke, it would free up another kit slot for use with something else.

I'd go even further (on a different page) to suggest giving regular riflemen team-colored smoke (purple, orange), have it share ammo with their regular smoke, and be right-click-able.

The only grenade that you really need to drop is an incendiary. Others really don't need that feature.

right and left click don't work for firing differnet kinds of projectiles, so I don't think this can work

its like, bayonetting is a differnet projectile to shooting, which is why they are separate

I thought the reason they were separate is because you had to be able to look down the sights/scope.

Would open up another slot which is always useful, you could also do left click - knife/ right click - shovel seeing as they dont have secondary functions, opening up slots for loads of classes. If it's possible could be useful to implement new equipment, Backing.

Howabout aiming the grenade? Or preparing a grenade before you go to where you want to throw it?

I've been in several situations where I've right clicked and held smoke/frag grenades before I went out of cover to throw them, or have right clicked to put the grenade at my feet (To cover my position or while yelling "Allah Akbar").

Why is there two colours in the first place? To me it seems unnecessary.

Gives the SL flexibility to mark different things such as LZ or area for attack.

If anything, the "normal" throwing variant would be the one that should go. It's like that in many games so it wouldn't be completely new. It's slower, yes, but this is not really a fast game, so... yeah. Only at the beginning there'd be people clicking it just once and blowing their squads up, but... Since the suggestion won't work anyway, we don't have a problem I guess.

YOu can sprint up to a target then pop the grenade in to show everybody where the enemy is inc. an attack heli if you're too lazy to laze.

I did always think that having two different colors of smoke was kind of a waste. One is just fine.

I mean you never see:
[cobra pilot] "Roger green smoke, proceeding to engage"
[Squad leader] "you killed my team! I needed an extract on the smoke."
[cobra pilot]"oh, uh you should have used the purple smoke then"

That's true. I never ever used green smoke. Only the faction smoke.

But only the apache's gunner can see colours in the game.. It's mostly black / white for the other faction's attack helo's (correct me here if I'm wrong), + it's lot more inconvenient to run to throw a smoke grenade while you could just lase the ground to pinpoint the area for the attack helicopter for it to strike where you want..

Ground forces such as armour can differentiate between colours.

I've always found the second smoke completely useless, there are much better ways to mark targets for friendlies than using smoke. In your squad you have the magical marker that everyone can see, and outside of it you have grid coordinates and the laser designator.

I do think them both are actually quite useful. If I want to distinguish my squad from lets say the three others right next to me for the transport vehicle that's about to come and pick me up I always use the special colored one. Its easy just to say "pick us up, marked with purple smoke".

For assaulting I've used green smoke. First grunts throw in their normal smokes to cover and as a squadleader I just pop the green smoke to initiate the assault.
Also green is good to signal others that a certain bunker/fortress has been cleared out.

Its not like people think, "oh there is green smoke, it must mean area is clear". 99% of the time the squadleader uses the smoke as cover, nothing else. So you basically have to tell the team that the green smoke means that the bunker is cleared. But then again, you could just tell team that the bunker is cleared withouth throwing the smoke in the first place.

The different coloured smoke are tools. Not everyone chooses to use all the tools offered in the officer kit.

They can be used as markers, as cover, even to distract & confuse the enemy. How many of you have seen the green/coloured smoke and thought about concentrating fire in its direction because of the chance that a SL might be there. (Hostile one of course ;P)
