Hello folks,
My user name is N0B0MAUN. I'm from the Pathfinders clan. I'm one of the few in my clan that enjoys playing Project Reality. PR is what I think Battlefield 2 or BC should've been.
Now, I'm posting to seek help from anyone out there. I've been playing Project Reality for approximately a year or two. I never had this problem before, and all of the sudden, this began happening. Lately, I've been suffering from lag and don't know what the cause is. The lag occurs everytime I move and is not that severe. But bad enough that it would affect close quarters combat, and quick movements. I've done almost everything I know to do with lag, but seems to not work.
Below is a list of things I've done:
1. Defragment
2. Virus Scan (AVG Free)
3. Spyware Scan (Spyware Doctor)
4. Updated all my drivers
5. Disk Clean-up
6. Uninstalled and re-installed BF2, Patch 1.5, and uninstalled/re-installed PR 0.87
7. Played PR Single player and BF2, still there was lag
My Ping would be around 90 and 190 depending on the servers I'm playing in. My Computer is a Dell, and it's about 7 years old. All I've been doing is upgrading the hardware.
I have a moderate knowledge of computers and the things I've done noted above show the scope of what I know on what to do with these situations. So, please be patient with me if I ask how to do things.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Lagging, need help
We've had things like "APC lag" which caused players near any manned APC to lag like a hell, but I don't know current situation of this issue. I've suffered this lag time to time myself too.

Re: Lagging, need help
You know you love a game when you try to fix stuff that others wouldn't even notice
It kind of sounds like video lag. Have you noticed a drop in fps during the lag spike?
Try these commands in the console. 1) This to see your fps. 2) This to unlock the default max fps
~ renderer.drawfps 1
~ game.lockfps 0
I really can't see this as a network issue, unless you're on wireless.
I noticed you said you get this lag when playing PRSP and vBF2. Do you get the lag if you play single player?
Let me try to get a good example of your lag situation. Stand about 5m away from an object(i.e crate, truck, heli) Now strafe left or right, keeping the center of your screen on the object. Basically moving in a crescent or half circle shape. Did you notice the sharp, jagged movement of your mouse? Is this the lag you're describing?

Re: Lagging, need help
clueless_noob... I don't think it's because of being near a manned APC. Thanks for replying though.
Mr. Hyde... yeah, I played both. BF2 had a little lag, but lagged non the less and PRSP wasn't so bad in the beginning but got really worse the closer I got to the action. Now, what do you mean by console? Is this the one where you hit "`"? Then I type in the command? If so, what should I be looking out for? As for the in-game observation on strafing, I'll check it out and will let you know what I find. Thanks again...

"`" that's the one, the Tilde key if I'm not mistaken. In game it will bring up the console so you can type in the 2 commands I previously wrote.
The first one will show you a number in the upper left corner of your screen. That number in red will be the Frames Per Second. If it drops below 30 it will make the game choppy. I want you to check it out to see if it drops; especially around the action. The number will change constantly, depending on your surroundings and situation.
So when you play offline you still get the lag? Is it worse when you go online?

What video card do you have?...wasn't so bad in the beginning but got really worse the closer I got to the action...

Re: Lagging, need help
Okay Mr. Hyde, so I tried playing Multiplayer and did the codes that you asked and here are the approximate numbers when I entered them.
renderer.frawfps 1 = (Not Playing/Not Moving) 22-37/30-65 and (While playing/moving) 15-22/48-66
game.lock 0 = (Not Playing/Not Moving) 28-37/36-68 and (While playing/moving) 15-32/48-66
The numbers I noted are all on the ship away from the action. Sometimes it'll look okay, but went down once I started moving. There were 2 guys on the ship with me, one was starting up a chopper.
The numbers were pretty much almost the same as far as comparing "render and game". I was on for a short period (5-10 minutes), which was not long enough to be near the action.
I recall that it did get WAY choppier when I got close to the action on PRSP (off-line).
I did this exercise on Muttrah, I was on the ship when I did the strafing thing. It wasn't choppy when I did it. I suspect a virus or something's wrong with my VGA card?
I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 @ 768 Mb.

Re: Lagging, need help
Here's more information Mr. Hyde... I googled the code that you gave me and it seemed to instruct me to drop all my video settings. I did, and it was still lagging pretty much the same way as it was when I had my video settings on high. It seemed that everytime my FPS got down to 15.0/66.7ish it would practically freeze or slow down drastically. This was also when I was close to the action.
I'm just clueless...
What sucks more is that if my VGA is the problem, I am going to be very pissed. I just bought that thing mid last year! I'm hoping that it's a software problem with a fix as opposed to a hardware problem that will require a replacement.
I still need help so if anyone out there knows how this could be solved, I'd greatly appreciated.

Re: Lagging, need help
Nobomaun,
Have you used battlefield cleaner yet?
If you still have trouble run battlefield cleaner to flush out your video cache files.
Also this worked for me:
Start game and go to video settings
Select 'default' hit 'apply' then quit out.
Restart game and try a round.
I, like you had a lag problem (suddenly after tweaking video settings).
Just resetting to all low didn't work, but setting to 'default' did.
After that I was able to adjust setting up for best performance.
Check out Battlefield 2 Tweak Guide for more tips.
I found it a gold mine of useful game info.
Hope it helps

Re: Lagging, need help
Hey [R-COM]thepalerider, thanks for the intel. Unfortunately, it didn't work. I ran Battlefield cleaner and cleared out 2113 files from my Video Cache. Then, I also set my video settings to default.
Both methods were a no go. I will look into Battlefield tweaks and will let you know if whether or not I'm able to find something else.
I'm also starting to think that my mobo is not able to handle my VGA card as much as it used to? There are so many "what ifs". Worst case scenario is reformatting my hard drive and start fresh. If that doesn't work, I may have to assemble a new one. This will unfortunately take some time. After all, my PC is about ohhhhh 6-8 years old now.
By the way, I'm crossing my fingers here... But could around the same time this started happening, my Keyboard and/or anything I connect to my rear USB stopped working, or intermittently stopped working. Could there be a link?
I'm still crossing my fingers...

Re: Lagging, need help
I've got the same problem.
It used to work with no lag but something changed. Might be one of the patches or v0.87.
