Shadows

Post by sniperrocks »

Okay, this is more for eye candy and visual realism :D
I'm not sure if it's possible on the BF2 engine, but a possibility in the new engine for PR2

While watching this video:

I found the quality pretty stunning but the shadows really bothered me, especially the vehicle shadows. Is it possible to make the shadows darker?

This is what shadow should look like in RL

I'm not sure if it's really do-able in BF2, maybe make the shadow actually part of the bottom of the tank (?)

Just suggesting :) What do you guys think?

No, I think he's right. I want to actually be able to hide in shadows, too.

With low settings, people don't see shadows at all, giving them a huge advantage over those with high settings.

The darkness of shadows depends a lot on light conditions, harsh light conditions like you're suggesting will only really happen in bright sunlight/no cloud conditions, and even the places in shadow are getting indirect light, something which can't be simulated accurately in game without shaders. A lot of PR maps are cloudy/overcast, where there is little to no direct light and it creates an ambient-occlusion look. More modern engines can approximate indirect light and ambience but alas the bf2 engine cannot.

As people have said, it's not very practical in-game since low-end users won't be able to see the shadows. You can probably do shadows by projecting a texture from the bottom of the tank but I don't know if the bf2 engine is capable, and there are much better ways of getting more dynamic results.

Hey low settings has disadvantages, and even not seeing shadows can be a disadvantage (Someone with high settings can see someone hiding behind a tree for e.g).

But, for this reason Shadow's can't be a major part of PR ;)

And low quality players can't see locks on doors :D

I know :D I was until christmas a Low Quality Player... in all senses of the word :)

The chain link fences (The destructible ones) are worse - in between the poles there is just nothing, so I must of looked retarded trying to walk through them xD.

If you really like that look you could just adjust your contrast.

Adjusting contrast, does that actually work? o.o

but it's cause while learnign drawing, I was taught the shadow (closest to the object) was to be the darkest in most conditions

Oh true, low settings really don't see the shadows that well :) which is what I play on
