What way would you like to get PR?

Post by Oddsodz »

I Can't make polls. So please answer if you feel like it.

Anyway. What way would you like to get PR?

Right now we have a system of 2 installers IE - Core-setup.exe and Levels-setup.exe

This works for %99.9999 of players. But can be confusing for new comers to PR who download core and they try to play and get lost as there is no maps.

So I made the "PR-Downloader". But that will not work for everybody.

So I was thinking maybe it's time to start releasing PR on a DVD disc image IE prDVD.iso

This I am sure has been suggested somewhere. But I am asking the public here, What way would you like to get your next release of PR?

1 - core.exe + levels.exe The current way.

2 - PR-Downloader

3 - DVD disc image.

Download by File planet (as currently used). I would love the idea of the DVD, but the costs and delay in receiving it may not be worth the day of downloading.. If there was a system where the download was released on the estimated day of arrival, that would surely make me think...

Edit: Im also assuming selling DVD's of it may encounter legal battles with DiCE / EA

No no no, I Mean by DVD disc image is that you download the DVD image prDVD.iso and burn it to a disc yourself (or Mount it for them that know about virtual drives).

I don't know. If someone can't download 2 files and install them in order, I doubt they know how to mount/burn a DVD image correctly.

I would go for option 1. 2, if it would be more officially integrated/endorsed and used to check for updates automagically. Like First Strike(BF2142) has it with their FS Launcher.

I'm happy to use any way that allows me to pause and resume the download, if needed. Downloading two installers from a server that supports resuming or via torrent is fine with me.

I don't think a DVD image would be easier on new players. Those who download core without downloading levels, missing the text saying you need both, probably won't know how to mount a virtual drive. Though as a suggestion to the PR webmasters, I'd make it say in BIG letters on the download page that both core and levels are required.

Core + Levels as a single install would be the same size as a DVD image, so there would be no reason to add the mounting steps. Plus, it is even easier to simply burn the two install files (or one large one) to a DVD than to make a

The real question: Do you want two multi gigabyte files or a single gigabyte file that is the size of both?

I'd prefer to have one single huge file myself, but I understand the easier manipulation of two smaller files we have now for some users.

Riiiight. Because downloading a single file and then having to burn it to a disc and then installing it is much easier than downloading 2 files ( :o ) and installing them one after the other...

Sorry but if those 0.0001% of people can't manage the normal process then I really doubt they'll be able to manage mounting the file on a dvd. Additionally the reason the files are released as two files is because they are so large (people actually complain about the size when full retail games atm can be up to 15GB in size), so having them as a single file would defeat that particular exercise too.

Jiggy, I Believe that the reason for 2 setup files "core+levels" was (and I might be wrong) because of FAT32 file systems on WinXP not beaning able to handle files over 2gig in data size. It might be 1gig I can't remember for sure. This I believe was fixed latter on with patches from Windows update.

Plus to have a 3.5gig setup.exe file has it's own issues for start up runtime issues. It can take forever and a day to start running the installer. You dubble click and it can take like 5 minutes or more for anything to happen. This is confusing and can also lead to system lock ups.

This is why having it on a DVD can solve a lot of issues. Take a look at any game disc you have and you will see that there is in most cases a "setup.exe" and a few folder with "data.cab" (windows zip) files with all the game data inside. This makes distribution of PR a simple one. Just release the DVD disc and bingo jingo. Everybody gets the same thing. You have to think of this as if you was a brand new player to PR. It's ok for the likes of yourself and I to just download Core and levels.exe. We know what's going on. but new players to PR don't. And that is what I wish to help fix.

So the case for a DVD disc is a fair one. The only real draw back is the size of every release. There would be no incremental patches.

If you want it simple. Then "PR-Downloader" is the simplest way of them all. But as I said. It will not work for everyone. It's fast and simple. But some users will not get the benefit of it if their ISP throttles "bitTorrent" traffic protocols (in the last few release only 1 uses has had that issue).

At this point in PR life. I Don't think anybody cares about how big the data is that they have to download. They will download it anyway if they want to play.

max size for single file is 4gb in FAT32(2^32 bytes = 4 gigs)

as for 1st post question

1 - pretty much fine for me, never had problems
2 - haven't tried, so cant give feedback
3 - i doubt DVD disc image will help people who have problems with, it might be handy when you want to start installation and go away for 5 minutes, so when you come back everything installed, not only half of it :-)

I Said I might be wrong lololol. But players at that time complained about download data size beaning so big.

I don't think it can be much better than the current system. The only improvement I see is an incremental patch system, but that for major versions leads to bad bugs. Frankly if someone finds the current levels/core system confusing, they probably shouldn't be playing PR.
