Fermi GPU details to be released at....

The NDA will soon to be lifted and enthusiasts will at last learn the technical details of the 'fermi' Dx11 GPU's from Nvidia which have been in development for a while.

If these cards are as powerful as they are made out to be, we may just see Nvidia at last finally thrust something worth considering in our faces! and a price-war may occur... hopefully!

I'm quite interested. Not that I'm planning on buying one (can't afford high-endies), but we could make an estimated guess of how expensive it will be. If it will have 'over-the-top-specs', then it'll force you to sell your house and two cars, before you could buy one.

I've been umming and aaaaring about what GPU to plonk in my new build soon, and I've been weighing up either a 5870 or a 5970, Nvidia may just throw a spanner in the works I think.

There are rumours that the lower-end card is apparantly 2 x faster than the GTX 295.. and that the cheaper(lol) version will cost $520 dollars.. moar rumours!

tbh i dont see much need in it, current cards(58(9)**, GTX 260/280) are enough to run most of games on max, unless you need uber high res for crysis on your 50" panel
the good thing that prices will go down for other cards

The best thing that will come out of this little high-end card war will be the prices on the ATI cards dropping if the Fermi cards are 'that' powerful.

ATI are able to get profit out of lowering the prices of their cards and Nvidia
wouldn't be able to compete.. I'm predicting that the top-end fermi card will be better than the 5970 however it'll most certaintly be much more expensive.. considering that a 5970 still costs £490-£580 depending on the retailer!

the 5xxx series launch had the exact same problems as the Fermi release will undoubtably have.. low supply.. high demand.. = stupidly high prices.

Lets hope that the ebay price 5850/70's and 5970's don't get eaten up too fast! Might actually be able to pick up a good deal!

I was actually reading articles about the the small 5 series supply yesterday although only slightly outdated (December) but with me being not so intelligent I never actually thought about the impact it could have on price even more so I guess from Enthusiast/Custom retailers.

Also, it would be awesome to pickup a 57/58/59 from Ebay as soon as those Fermis start flying off the shelves the enthusiasts are going to need a small 'refund' to make the replacement less painful. So it truely is a great time to be looking at a custom build right now.

However, as far as power consumption is concerned I wouldn't be too fussed. There's a few points I would like to make about that.

1. The 5 series uses LESS power than the 295 despite being more powerful.
2. A lot of the 5 series cards didn't work as stock and needed a tweak to raise the voltage.....
3. We are in a 'green' revolution (nice twist there I think)
4. If Fermi doesn't suffer from crashes and some of us are planning on getting one then we may need a better power supply (especially if we like cheap builds) and any additional cooling would definitely be a great option to keep your system running as it is now.

It seems like it's built for GPGPU first, GPU second. Throw in the fact that currently it's big enough to make TSMC struggle with it, and the fact that it doesn't have a dedicated tessellation unit means that the unified shader units have to take the load, and that means that it will have a performance hit.

Not trying to be a downer, but it's going to be too slow, too big, and too hot.

Big. Most defenitely. Hot. Defenitely. Slow? Nobodies really sure!

Found a lovely little link that sums up a negative view of the card. It mostly talks about it's manufacturability, power costs, graphical power and performance. It made me think bit and could easily make you believe that these cards are quite Over-hyped indeed, although this is quite a Pro-AMD view, it's still a good read.

I'm sure there are arguments against this view from Pro-nvidia users but I'll try and post some a bit later.

Although because of the nature of the card it might not drop prices how new cards normally. The card isn't exactly going to be a favorable option for even most of the high-end gamer market (or so it would seem...). It could prove more succesful in industrial applications than being a leisure toy for the filthy rich

Semi accurate is the most anti-nVidia source ever, don't trust much that comes from there. And as the URL states, all info is semi-accurate, in other words some stuff is slightly fabricated so that the guy can get some more hits to his site.
