Remove squad tags in 50m radius
Title says it all really. I did a search and read through the *** thread (lol) and couldn';t find anything.
Have the tags come up when aimed at them, or near them (the tags quickly come up). This is hopefully not hardcoded.
or if you dont like that suggestion - just make it less luminous green!
Pro's -
- Players will have to be far more aware of their surroundings and friendly positions.
- Players will learn to distinguish the kits more (If they don't already).
- Realism and immersion will be greater.
- Might promote moving formations so the squad leader knows who is where to control them
Con's -
- Possibly more teamkilling
- Harder squad leader to squad communication possibly

Re: Remove squad tags in 50m radius
My main point is that it will make many players far more aware, which can't be a bad thing.

Because you will be using your map far more, and taking notes constantly on where your friendlies are and yourself.
Some players do this already but for many servers that I play on people are just not aware of anything going on.

They dont even check the minimap when they are in vehicles for mines, why do you think theyd take more time to bring up the map all the time to see if its a friendly or not?

Don´t like it.
With mumble it´s always good to see the name of the guy next to you without having to look at the map.
Makes communicating much more direct. Just call out the name and you get a response

One of the main innate human sense that games cannot realisicaly simulate is spatial awareness, your positioning in relation to your environment, sometimes we have to take a slight hit in realism to make things that in real life are easy to do actualy possible in a video game. In real life you have the ability to see 360o around yourself without changing the orientation of your body. When your with friends in a crowded area, slight, but automatic movements of your eyes and head allow you keep track and reference the positions of those around you in 3D, the freindly tags and off screen markers denoting the position of your squad mates, although unrealistic, at least go someway towards compensating for the fact that your battlefield avatar is wearing a neckbrace and has the visual accuity of a fish with one eye poked out.

The direction your body/gun/etc is turned simulates looking in a direction.. and your eyes themselves can move -- just look at different parts of the screen.
Sure, that's only to a certain extent, but think about it: if your squad is behind you unless you physically turned your head 180 (impossible -- try it. 90 degrees is about all you can do) it doesn't work out. You can still turn to the left and the right and still move in the same direction -- strafing with A/D and switching off to W is easy as pie.

Re: Remove squad tags in 50m radius
If you are settled in a static coverage position (such as a SAW gunner) and looking around would screw up your deviation, the markers allow you to keep the same spatial awareness as simply turning your head while keeping the weapon steady. Also applies to HATs, regular riflemen, Medics healing someone, etc.Startrekern wrote:The direction your body/gun/etc is turned simulates looking in a direction.. and your eyes themselves can move -- just look at different parts of the screen.

Ditto! Both cover the same situation (nearby friendlies and markers), just the two different partsStartrekern wrote:Wow, I posted here thinking it was the other thread. *facepalm*

Re: Remove squad tags in 50m radius
They should stay. Like how the sprint bar in the GUI is "realistic" because in RL, you'll know how tired you are, but you can't do that in a game unless you use a bar.
Same goes for squad tags over you head.
In RL, if you are within 50 meters of sa squad mate, you will be able to tell if that's Bob or Joe. The problem is in PR, everyone looks the exact same unless it somehow displays their name above their head. Therefore, the tags above teammates heads, though a bit tackey, ultimately add to a more realistic battlescape.

Re: Remove squad tags in 50m radius
Gotta take into account that there's no way of distinguishing who's who other then through mumble, since we don't all have our own personalised model with different faces, hair etc, this is the only way of simulating recognising the guys in your squad.

Re: Remove squad tags in 50m radius
I wasn't proposing taking them out completely, but for when they pop up when you look at them, like it is now with over 50m, so you can distinguish who is who. and also through the map.
Even though wrong thread snoggums I did want the arrows gone too but forgot to say it! For the deviation from looking around, thats what your squad's for, covering all arcs!
