[Info] Videotrace
i dont know if this has been put op here before but take a look at this:
[R-DEV]Ninja2dan: Not having a spotter is like masturbating with a cheese grater...mildly amusing at first, but generally painful and bloody in the end.
Thornehaw: If all this have been evidently true, Battlefield is a much scarier and dirtier than ever imagined. Not a conspiracy, but a possibility. If it is true, then trusting another is quite worrisome.

Re: Videotrace
It's a very neat idea. Although I'm not sure how it would really be used in the real-world - These technologies seem fairly novel, but they're not that revolutionary or practical enough to be really useful. However, they do look like nice toys to play around with
Maybe they would be useful in pre-vis/concept-ing...
Here's another one which people might find interesting:

a few years old now, and I haven't heard of any practical use of it yet. Though as H.sta says it could serve as a 3d reference or base for more complex stuff, but then again it is dependent on what you are making if it is useful or worth the effort.
One of my professors is doing something quite interesting in a near related field which I most likely will be joining him on after January. Stereoscopic realtime normal and ambient occlusion mapping of 3d environments. Should prove for some extreme realistic base texture sets.

I can see how this would be useful for extracting the proportions of complicated objects, but it's a lot of effort to go through when there's often an easier/more accurate way.
Actually I can think of one very good use. For camera tracking shots it would be a much quicker and easier way of creating object masks, or rough objects for reflections, for compositing CG into live action.

I could see this as being extremely useful for making the modeling process a lot quicker for models where you have a video to go off of. Especially for buildings...
What would be neat is if you could rig a camera up to some sort of gyro and accelerator rigged camera that could accurately track the position of the camera as you walked around. Then you could just walk around a city block or something for an hour or so and at the end you should have a rough shell of it
