Wired internet connection problem.

Post by dpq06 »

So im trying to just plug my desktop computer into my linksys wireless router thing, which works with the wireless on my laptop, but for some reason does not work when i plug my desktop computer into it. When i first plug it in to one of the 5 ports it says with a little light theres something in it for about 10 seconds while the internet connection status thing (in windows XP) says theres "limited or no connectivity" or "a network cable is unplugged", then the light on the linksys disapears and it continues to say those things. Now, when i plug the laptop in it works... so theres clearly something wrong with the computer it self probably. I have tried just wiring the real modem thing (i really don't know what they're called. sorry.) and it still says "limited or no connectivity". I think (yes i think) i have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver software for the internet software stuff and of course that doesn't work... I have gone through stuff like this for the past few months... moving, comcast scamming us and making us buy new stuff because we "need" it, even though the modem thing i had before worked great, and overall the internet just likes to be a **** sometimes. so any help would be great. Im running Windows XP incase you missed it up there.
this relates to PR because if i don't have the internet fixed then i shall not be able to play PR .9... online. only singleplayer, and without online PR then my life would have no meaning.

Sorry if my description sucks.

please help.

I would check to see if your NIC(Network Interface Card) In your PC is working. Check it by:

go-to Start > right-click Computer > Manage > Device Manager. Once you're in Device Manager, look for your Ethernet adapter or network card. If it has a yellow triangle, right-click on it and choose update driver.

My second guess would be your NIC setup is set to static IP. In which case it will not communicate with your Linksys router thingy. Of course even if it was set in this way you would not receive the 'network cable unplugged' symbol. Go into your control panel and select Network connections. There should be a troubleshooting button or diagnose button in there(Sorry I don't have XP at the moment). If you can't find those two buttons, at least click the details button and let me know what you see, either by posting a screen shot or just writing it down.
