CTD when joining server

Basically as it says in the title. whenever i try to join the sound glitches up a bit then i crashes with no error report. it happens with every mod i have and it happens with VBF2 as well. I am able to run singleplayer mode on everything including VBF2.

I have tried manually updating punkbuster.

Deleting the cache files.

messing with the resolution and stuff.

installing that BF2 cache cleaner thing.

uninstalling BF2 and patch 1.5 after installing 1.41...

Is it when you finish loading or right when u click on the server.

It always happens right when i click on the server.

1.4 or 1.41? There is a difference there.

yes, 1.41 i mean. and im going to try reinstalling BF2 again...

EDIT: and, of course, it doesn't work. my next step will be to delete every mod and bf2 and re install everything. That is, if someone doesn't come to the rescue and give some suggestions.

Do you have the store version of BF2 or the EADM BF2 install? I had the cached EADM and it ended up not working for me, so I just re-downloaded it again and installed it via EADM and presto.

Run PR in 'windowed' mode
If you still have problems
run PR in 'windowed' mode to see if any error messages come up
(instead of running in full screen, it runs in a 'window')
To do so
Right click on shortcut.
Choose properties from bottom of list.
Modify the text in your shortcut's 'target' window.

Change
+fullscreen 1
to
+fullscreen 0
If you only see:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe"

Add:
start +modPath mods/pr +menu 1 +fullscreen 0
(note you need 1 space between pr.exe" and start so it should look like this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" start +modPath mods/pr +menu 1 +fullscreen 0

Then Google or use 'search' on Project Reality web page for the error message you get.


If you still have trouble run battlefield cleaner to flush out your video cache files

Still no joy?

Trash your BF2 cache files
Path:
C:\Users\'your user name here'\Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache

Throw EVERYTHING inside the folder named cache away.
don't worry the files will be replaced with new ones when the game restarts.

Still CTD?

Some other things you can try before you uninstall/reinstall.
Backup your BF2 folder that's inside your documents folder. Once you have a backup delete the original from your documents folder.
Try starting PR from your PR shortcut
a new default folder is created
link to your online account.
If all goes well (CTD gone) all you have to do to get your custom settings back is copy your 'control' file from your backup to the new profile folder.
path:
C:\Users\your user name here\Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0002
note: you may not have a 0002 folder so use 0001

well, i tried nuking everything BF2 related including mods. reinstalled. still happening. tried the windowed mode with no error report. I not sure if this is contributing to it but when i update it to .50 i don't download a new installer from the internet i just use and old .50 installer that i got awhile back. should i download a new one if the old one is possibly corrupted?

I'd recommend the thought you gave on that if you've tried everything Pale had to offer. Possibly the file got corrupted, but depending how "healthy" the hard drive is, misread or damaged files aren't common, or even short to rare. And possibly, if you care to shed more time for PR, try to re-download another installer for 1.41.

A little more info regarding the error message if you see it; else not, refer back to Pale.

hmmm. well i'm using the 1.41 patcher that the BF2 installer sort of already does. Should i get it off the internet instead? well i think i'll see if anything different happens i just put in a new power supply and an Nvidia 9800 GTX sooooo. im desperate for possible solutions right now. if nothing else works i have another computer that works fine with bf2 and PR.

EDIT: yea okay it still doesn't work with the new hardware. saaaaaad fffaaaace....
