Question for enlisted guys.
Doesnt matter which army you are in. How much ammo do emplaced machine guns get ? How much ammo does a light vehicle on a combat mission with a mounted machinegun carry ?

Re: Question for enlisted guys.
I used to serve, got out of the Corps in 2007.
that sort of thing varies hugely. I served in Afghanistan on my last tour and every time we left the wire we would carry as much as we could, without it getting in our way and bogging us down. We had some pretty heavy contacts, but our gunners never once had to worry about running out of ammo as far as I can remember.
as far as emplaced guns go, at our firebase at least it was far more common to push up a berm with a bulldozer and drive a humvee up onto it so the gunner could just see over the edge and use that as our "emplaced gun."
hope that helps. If its exact numbers you are looking for I dont remember.

as much as he can, and then his number 2 will carry as much as he can, and then his vehicle will have more...charliegrs wrote:how much ammo does an m249 gunner carry?
it all depends on the missions, you going out to F*^% **** up, carry as much as you can, you doing a Recon mission, you wont want to weigh yourself down.
I know when i was a gunner i had atleast 4 boxes in my backpack and 2 on my body, and my number 2 carried about 3 or 4.
that was only for LMG

Depends on his load, Usually one or two in front and then it all depends from there like if has to carry a ruck or assault pack. If nothing he could carry a 3rd in back, but he if has an assault pack or ruck more will be in there.Charliesierra-RCR wrote:as much as he can, and then his number 2 will carry as much as he can, and then his vehicle will have more...

Re: Question for enlisted guys.
Emplaced MGs in a FOB have have pseudo unlimited ammunition because they have fairly big ammo stores at the FOB to keep feeding the guns. So unless under prolonged siege those MGs will always have ammo. The amount of ammo carried outside the wire depends and lots of circumstances, unit SOPs, mission, available ammo, ect there is no set in stone number. However the general rule of thumb when going into combat is to take as much as you can carry.

So a landrover or humvee would have more than 9 boxes of ammo ?

Re: Question for enlisted guys.
judging from the size of a box of .50 ammo and that humvees don't have an abundance of room, Id would think that 9 sounds like a reasonable amount while still being able to carry AT4's and MRE's, water, extra mags and grenades, ect in the truck,

Re: Question for enlisted guys.
I've seen a few people do this mostly on strykers, they will tie down .50 ammo to the side with good old 5 50 cord.Teek wrote:judging from the size of a box of .50 ammo and that humvees don't have an abundance of room, Id would think that 9 sounds like a reasonable amount while still being able to carry AT4's and MRE's, water, extra mags and grenades, ect in the truck,

Re: Question for enlisted guys.
Different countries have different guidelines, different missions require different loadouts too.
An m249 gunner would probably never step off with less than 1000 rounds of link, but might step off with double that.
