^^ This.

You have to change and break away from the thinking you had in .87, you have to "think outside the box" and be clever - that was one of the aims of the rally changes.

This thread should really be named "New Rally System ruined unrealistic gameplay" :O

Well, gratz to the sniper. With a single bullet he has crippled the USMCs CAS system by taking out the brain of the operation, the SL and spotter.

Shouldn't CAS be available to the SL leading infantry squads w/ or w/o a spotter ?
I think the SL of a CAS squad should also be working w/ the infantry to hit targets the spotter may not be able to see.
Hilltops and roofs are great places to see lots of the battlefield but they are also great places to get shot from so I think working closer w/ the inf to spot and also to have them screen the CAS spotter would be a better idea than planning on sitting on a mountaintop the whole game.
IRL don't the CAS spotters move w/ the infantry ?

Yes. This is why all squad leaders have the GLTD and therefore the ability to spot for the Cobra. Instead of whining about losing his only spotter perhaps the OP should have liased with other squads to provide targets and lazes.

Usually this is how my Close air support squad operates on these maps.

Squad leader : takes role of spotting, Sniper/squad leader kit
2nd member : Helps squad leader / Medic or Marksman.

3rd : Pilot / co pilot
4th : pilot / co pilot

Alright so the new rally dissapears after 60 seconds. This is where the problem arises. Usually the squad leader is spotting 100% of the time not worrying about setting a rally.

Today on muttrah my squad leader was spotting for me , while me and my co pilot were in the cobra. I dropped him in the A7 mountain range in the Littlebird before the cobra spawned in. I told him to set a rally , he did and it dissapeared. He got One shotted by a enemy sniper about 30 minutes into spotting for me, and with the rally point gone " The cobra became useless without eyes on the ground/mountain.

CAS support is affected by this new rally system do to its time limit.

" EDIT " Back in 0.87 my spotters would spawn in if they were sniped or artyed off the mountains on these maps. Now they cant spawn in due to the time limit, Unless there setting rallys ever 60 seconds which un focuses them on priority targets.
So what your saying is, the new RP changes result in a more realistic progression of a events than before? Is this another ironically titled thread? In all seriousness, imo the sniper was operating EXACTLY how he should have been and prioritised a high-value target, yourslef.
Now what would be the point in snipers if a successful engagement results in no change in the tactical geography of the battle?
Snipers now have the potentially devastating and drastic effects on the battlefield, as per IRL.

New rally system is alot better make for better all round teamwork from the entire side not only the squad your in.

As for the op if i was on the ground getting bombed or lit up by a cobra I guess that there was a laze in the area Id position my squad so that we could have alook to see the best place the laze may be hiding then report that to the sniper team or tank depending on assets in my area. So thats 6 sets of eyes keeping a look out for the laze. On the other hand if i was doing the lazing knowing I had no spwan, I set my laze report the grid and KP or mark it for the pilot in my squad then move position It dosent make sence to stay in one spot when your work there is done. Its a bit BF2v to stick around to watch for the kill shot PR aint all about the kill and if you do stick around your bound to get spotted.

With all due respect, that is easier said than done. He isn´t the only one at fault here. ;)

Though I don´t think the rally system really ruins cas, just makes other roles more important.
