test a few different refresh rates and see if that helps, hook up another monitor or external one if youre on a laptop to see if its related to refresh rate

Having the same issue too, I am an administrator, refresh rates were changed however no resolution, deleted the bf2 data in my documents, still no resolution. Reinstalled three times, restarted four, hard shut down to reboot twice, cleared every time of temp file i can think of.

Sys Specs

Inspiron 6400 (aka E1505)
Windows XP Medica Center Edition SP2 (updated everything just shortof SP3)
Intel Dual Core 1.83ghz Each
2gb Ram
ATI Radeon 256MB

17gb left on a 100gb drive

I know my laptop isnt the best, but it should suffice, seeing as it can run far more resource intensive programs fairly smoothly for a computer like this.

my bet is if you hook up an old external monitor and set it as main screen, it will start. Give it a shot. I had the same problem in an inspiron 9xxx and had to hook up and old 15 inch crt to get bf2 to start past the black screen due to a refresh rate limitation of the laptop screen running a weirdo 61 hrz.

that's not an option, i don't have an external, i do have a flatscreen HDTV but i don't have a vga-vga, vga-S-video or Svideo to RCA for input, etc etc.

i uninstall PR after starting Vanilla BF2 proved to be troublesome (CTD issue), and it's still doing so.

I believe this might be a bigger problem with a select few systems, i'm testing this still with a few other setups on XP before i really say much more.

@op make sure your bf2 is updated to 1.5 (you have to install 1.41 first, then 1.5)
btw some reported that bf2 falsely stated it was at version 1.5

Yeah, BF2 said it was already updated to 1.5. Is there an easy way to get around that? Hopefully that would amend the whole "I'm just gonna crash to desktop" thing.
