is it when you start the exe ? or after you are already playing for a while.

The black screen of death is when you are running the game on laptop lcd with a 61hrz refresh rate , only way to get the game starting is by hooking up an old crt monitors to the laptop.

If its a desktop try setting your refresh rate to 60/75 and see what happens. Its related to refresh rate and bf2 being very picky about it with default settings

Yeah its a desktop , that slowed down the problem somewhat.
thanks anyhow.

Win 7 64bit , ATI 4970s or something like that.

Anyone with the same problem or fix thanks!

Your best bet is to still fiddle around with some refresh rates. And make sure the battlefield settings are also reflecting those setting by adaptiong your profile manually in your my documents/games/bf2/profile folder

okay i found out how to do it but it will only let me display 59 hz or 60 hz. it still doesnt work. do i lower my screen resolution cause right now mine is at 1440 by 900 pixels

okay i changed screen resolution to 1024 by 768 and i changed the refresh rate to 75 hertz. I am still getting the black screen. Any more suggestions?

make sure to have installed bf2 patches 1.41 and 1.5 (in that order)
run pr and installers as administrator (guess that'll be a problem at your office?)

How exactly do I install the 1.41 patch over my current install, if I can't even install the 1.5 patch because it says my game is currently patched to the latest version? (I bought a new copy of the game yesterday because I couldn't find my old disk.)

1.5 patch is incremental it does need 1.41 (full) to be installed

run the installers as admin:
first 1.41
then 1.5
