You guys got me wrong, i use mumble, i was just saying that for quieter conversations you have VOIP, when 2 squads are close use mumble, but there is a chance enemy will hear you.

RT has it perfectly set, TG is fail imo, too much confusion, 76589689 channels, simple is better, but what is missing is a whispering function wich would make it complete.

In real life, you cannot just tell the enemy to stop listening because you have something to say over 10 meters, in wich case you would either have to use hand symbolls or actually go to the outher squad and whisper.

Also i dont see a lot of taunting over the mumble either, happens from time to time but its part of the fun if not overused...

So, whispering is needed, separate channes are not (except squadleaders to use global).

And ability to talk to the enemies could come in handy when "unarmed" kits get ROE, so you could force to people to come out with their hands up or something...adds another RP element...

As for the whispering function, there shuld have be a different key because different mics have different pickup ranges and volumes and whatnot, so some would whisper, some would not. The voice when really close (up to 1m) would be as loud as when talking only it fades at 2 or 3 meters.

In "real life" everyone on a battlefield isn't speaking english. ;)

Also, TG's channels aren't confusing. There are two channels, a squad leader channel for each, and a waiting room.

Thats not a valid argument imo. The stuff we are talking about here ("there's an enemy in there", "GRENADE!" or "medic") would be easy enough to guess in real life. (Im pretty sure most armies would even teach you a couple of the basic sentences)
And the bottom line is that you would, NO MATTER WHAT, be able to hear your enemy talking in the next room. I really dont think that should be removed.

you dont need to talk to your enemy.. "fun" isnt gonna help gameplay really..

its more realistic to be able to hear everyone around you because in real life when you talk out loud, everyone can hear you not just your allies

I looked a lot into this trying to set something like that up for RT.

It's easy to set up a mumble server with two teams, and allow them to keep the speak (normal local chat) only on the team, while using the alt-speak function to talk to both teams (locally). Giving us the best of both worlds. The problems occur when you want Squad leader channels, since force centering in one will make the sound go to all players on both teams. This is due to the fact that SL channels are just force centering in the alt speak channel, so you cant use the alt speak to talk to the other team.

The way to solve this would require a rewrite of mumble. From todays speak and alt-speak to speak 1, speak 2 and speak 3. Where speak 1 would be for all in your team, speak 2 for SL, and speak 3 for all players on the entire server. How hard this is to do i don't know, probably not extremely hard to do for a programmer, but it would require some work. Also the function of force centering would have to be added to speak 1 (today just speak), speak 2 would be just a rename of alt-speak, the speak 3 would just be an additional "copy" of the current alt-speak with a new name to separate them.

I hope you could understand that, I tried to keep it short and not too technical.

No matter what? What if there is an entire dam between you and your enemy? What if the wall is 10 meters thick? There's no point in arguing a point about realistic aspects of Mumble because Mumble simply isn't that realistic.

There is no sound occlusion in Mumble, so terrain and objects don't affect the sound.

The bottom line is that Mumble is simply a means to talk to blue guys and allow SLs to communicate.

The majority of times when enemy teams start to communicate with each other, it becomes kinda childish. People gloat and act like idiots. The idea posed here would allow for the occasional benefit of communicating with colaberaters or surrendered (lol) combatants but I'd hate to see it abused.

I prefer TGs method of splitting the team channels.

Can we please be realistic here.. There are bugs/exploits with everything, and this is just stupid. We have 1 dam in PR atm, and ZERO 10 m thick walls.. So your point fails when you think of the other 99% of the time where you gain a semi-realistic feel of reallife audio. And thats the dimension that i feel is otherwise missing in PR

This is a valid point about Mumble, but its not what we are discussing here. Im not talking about the roleplaying part (or childish mocking of the other team) that you are refrerring to here. And that would be excatly the same if you had a 3. channel anyway.
Im talking about you overhearing your enemy talk to each other, and being able to use that to your tactical advantage. (just like you would IRL)
And as Staker pointed out, its not always people speak english.. You can speak French/German/Spanish etc. on an otherwise english server to gain an extra "edge" towards your opponent. In the same way the smart US player knows what is going on if he hears "Humbula!" being shouted when playing against MEC. (It means grenade :smile :)

I just think this is a huge part of real life warfare that should be in a semi-realistic game as PR.
