Little work on the MG3

Post by Shredhead99 »

I don't know if to put this into suggestions or into feedback forums, so take it to the other forum if it doesn't really fit in here.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/h8KIbHK_5Og&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/h8KIbHK_5Og&hl ... 2=0x999999" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/youtube]

As I was soldier in the Bundeswehr, I was trained on the MG3 and had my share of live firing action with it, especially when I was gunner on the Fuchs. So I have to complain a bit:

#1: The sound!
Where does this annoying metallic clattering come from? I've never heard an MG3 make such a noise. I heard an UZI make such noise, right when the upper receiver fell off
The MG3 is known for its distinct dry barking, like depicted in this video. Also, though the RoF seems right, you can't hear it.
I'm really sorry I can't offer better sources than this.

#2: The loading animation
There's an important (if not the most important) part missing! After closing the bolt and pulling the lever you have to pull the belt to put the first bullet into the chamber. It's a minor issue, but for realism you should implement it.

It's the german field manual, sorry I couldn't find an english version.

Look at 2:10, there he pulls the belt.

Yeps, but then the animation would be completely wrong, as I remember it?

Not sure if I heard/understood what youre talking about, but Im pretty sure the metallic sound you hear in PR is from the casings hitting the ground or each other, not from the actual firing sound.

Could be listening to the wrong thing though :)

The sound just reminds me of a steamhammer, like loose (heavy) metalparts hitting each other. The MG3 does not produce such an odd sound.

Okita is right. The metallic sound you are hearing is the metal shells hitting the concrete floor. Not the actual firing sound.

Though one might easily agree that they probably arent so audible over the firing of such a weapon[?]

I wouldnt know :)

Ooh, no, that's not what I meant, I actually refered to the shooting sound, not that high pinging sound of shells and belt parts.

i hear the distinct sound he his talking about. The in-game gun sounds alot deeper and jackhammer like where as the actual video sounds more 'tappy'. if that helps lol

Thanks for the animation feedback, we can try the belt pulling thing (even if there is no visible belt :p )

@ma2112
No, the sound is a bit brighter (higher), and you can't hear single shots like this, it's more like a fart, when you press the trigger for a millisecond. I'm struggling on the search for the right words, you see? Any possibility there's a british or american (ex)soldier who can describe the sound of it?

The belt pulling routine was implemented in the early 90s as a safety precaution. I can still remember that we laughed at the concept at the time. During basic training (1989 -Jägertruppe = Light Infantry) I was taught the oldschool, manly way of doing it (no belt pulling). I guess it was a different time then. The standard assault rifle was a 7.62 battle rifle (G 3)- not a mouse gun (G 36).

I ask a question to you then, the model we have has the belt painted onto the rounds, so that means that we cannot (easily) have the belt free-floating to pull. We could repaint the belt on the rounds so it looks like a disintegrating belt. Is it worth the trouble?

My only gripe with the MG3 is that the soldiers hand goes through the model in the first person screen, which should always be free of such major errors because they're quite eye catching (because the gun is in the screen all the time). I don't think that this belt-pulling measure, non-essential as it is apparently, should be a priority if its difficult to implement. The reloading animation as it is, is quite beautiful.

Shred is reffering to the firing sound sounding like the gun is rivetted/screwed/assembled loosely. You can hear that "steel" sound, where on the video the sound is absent.

Metallic ring when firing MG3 can be heard from great distances. Normally with such a great distance the ringing of falling to the ground shells should not be heard.
