PR.exe Won't Start

Hi. I just recently reinstalled BF2 up to 1.5 and thought I'd try playing PR again (haven't played since 0.86). I downloaded and installed it following every step that the manual says, and PR.exe simply won't run. NOTE: This is not the situation where PR starts, but then goes blank. IT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING. I've looked through the stickies and I can't find anything that applies exactly to my situation. BF2 runs fine, and both it and PR.exe I have set to run in compatibility mode with XP Service Pack 2. I am competely baffled as to what is going wrong here, and I'm sorry I can't give any more detailed explanations as what I have said pretty much sums it up.

Make sure to run it as Administrator.

Open the Task Manager and see if the process pops up and then suddenly disappears again or if it stays and just doesn't come to the front.

I've already running as an admin. The process doesn't even run.

Use the Explorer, go into "Battlefield 2\mods\pr" and start that "pr.exe" there. If that works something is wrong with your shortcut. If so post your shortcut's settings here.

It might be faster to try with reinstalling than wait for replies:
- Uninstall everything (PR, old Versions of PR, BF2 and Expansions)
- Install BF2
- Install BF2 patch 1.41 <- You must install this one before installing 1.5 etc
- Install BF2 patch 1.5
- Install PR v0.9 Part 1
- Install PR v0.9 Part 2

Again, I already tried starting it from the EXE, hence the title of the thread. And I also already did a fresh reinstall, wiped the registry and everything.

I have set to run in compatibility mode with XP Service Pack 2.

Do not run it in compability mode, that kills the FPS over time, so after around 1 hour will you get a FPS on around 12... Me and some swedish guys discovered that after a lot of testing...

But I don't know if this will solve your other problems.... but atleast one of them when you get so far that you can start playing....

My checksums were different than the ones posted. I don't really understand how they got corrupted downloading from FilePlanet. I guess I'll have to try ModDB.

I suggest you use a download manager like FDM, GetRight or FlashGet or a BitTorrent client like µTorrent or Azureus. Those programs are generally able to resume interrupted downloads and this way prevent data corruption. I believe they are essential for large downloads like the pr installers. Also you can use them to "resume" the corrupted download - this might have them redownlaod only the broken bits instead of the whole thing again.

Having the same problem, i doubleclick the shortcut, both the splash screens pop up, the PR one and the BF2 one.

Then the screen goes black, the PR mousepointer pops up, and it exits to desktop.

I have tried reinstalling it.

Anyone? :/

I too, am experiencing this issue. Both splash screens appear, screen flickers, then back to desktop.

Why do I need 1.41 installed?

The issue I am getting on Win7 64 is with vanilla too. Splash screen comes up, screen goes black, then process ends and back to desktop. Running as admin, deleted any BF2 files in my docs. When I installed I went straight to 1.5 though because I thought it was a complete patch... I guess I could try this but it means starting over. Will it help?

Its not , its incremental. You will have to wipe and start again. (and probably clean your registry of all EA GAMES/Battlefield 2 entries.)

Yeah the installer can take ages to come up. I am sure that M$ have something installed in their OSes so that anything other than their msi installers take ages to activate.

If you still have trouble run battlefield cleaner to flush out your video cache files

Still no joy?

Trash your BF2 cache files
Path:
C:\Users\'your user name here'\Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache

Throw EVERYTHING inside the folder named cache away.
don't worry the files will be replaced with new ones when the game restarts.

Still CTD?

Make a new user and try to join a server.
Don't worry about your settings yet, battlefield cleaner can transfer old
settings to the new one later

Some other things you can try before you uninstall/reinstall.
Backup your BF2 folder that's inside your documents folder. Once you have a backup delete the original from your documents folder.
Try starting PR from your PR shortcut
a new default BF2 folder is created in your documents folder.
link to your online account.
If all goes well (CTD gone) all you have to do to get your custom settings back is copy your 'control' file from your backup to the new profile folder.
path:
C:\Users\your user name here\Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0002
note: you may not have a 0002 folder so use 0001

It either can't find your BF2 install folder (corrupt registry) or it cant find your profiles folder (which means you have a redirected mydocuments folder or you haven't actually reclaimed your profiles from vanilla BF2)
