Exit to desktop on launch (both BF2 and PR2) dual monitor problem?

Post by TacRedline »

Dual Monitors, different resolutions both 60hz
Windows XP
GTX 275
4 gigs ram
OS and graphics card driver updated

here's what I did:

uninstalled BF2
re-installed BF2 - ran fine
re-installed BF2 Patch 1.4 - ran fine
re-installed BF2 Patch 1.5 - ran fine
installed PR .9 and now both my BF2 and PR just launch and exit to desktop after flickering a bit.

I have deleted my PROFILE folders and tried to set many different resolutions in my shortcuts e.g.
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 800 +szy 600 +restart 1

I thought it may be a dual monitor problem but I dissconnected one and it still just exits after a few flickers.

Thanks in advance :)

I run dual monitors just fine.
I think you just need to run PR at least @1024x768 and ditch the menu 1
Change it to:
"C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\pr\pr.exe" start +fullscreen 1 +szx 1024 +szy 768 +restart 1
( Your shortcut can do more. I use:
start +widescreen 1 +szx 1600 +szy 1200 +restart +playerName xxxx +playerPassword xxxx
Replace XXXX with your user name and password
Adding this string bypasses the startup video, logs you in and takes you directly to the server browser.)

If you still have trouble run battlefield cleaner to flush out your video cache files then try again.

Still no joy?

Trash your BF2 cache files
Path:
C:\Users\'your user name here'\Documents\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\cache

Throw EVERYTHING inside the folder named cache away.
don't worry the files will be replaced with new ones when the game restarts.

Still CTD?

OK
Some other things you can try before you uninstall/reinstall.
Backup your BF2 folder that's inside your documents folder. Once you have a backup delete the original from your documents folder.
Try starting PR from your PR shortcut
a new default folder is created
link to your online account.
If all goes well (CTD gone) all you have to do to get your custom settings back is copy your 'control' file from your backup to the new profile folder.
path:
C:\Users\your user name here\Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\0002
note: you may not have a 0002 folder so use 0001

Good luck

if you have got a new monitor the frequency might still be set to that of the old one and your new monitor is incompatible with that one (esp. when changing from a CRT [usually 60 to 120Hz] to an LCD/TFT [usually 60 to 75Hz] monitor)

in "My Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\000x" is a file named "Video.con"
it could look something like this:
Video.con wrote:VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 2
VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 2
VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 2
VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 2
VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 2
VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 2
VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 3
VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 2
VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@85Hz
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing Off
VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 0.9
VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 1
you should change the red marked frequency to what the monitor supports (consult manual) for example 60Hz is supported by all regular monitors afaik:
new Video.con wrote:VideoSettings.setResolution 800x600@60Hz
