which cpu?

Post by varasku »

Hi there. First off, heres my motherboard:

Manufacturer Dell Inc.
Model 0WG864
Chipset vendor Intel
Chipset model P965/G965
Chipset revision C2
Southbridge vendor Intel
Southbridge model 82801HH (ICH8DH)
Southbridge revision B0

would like to know what is the best cpu that will fit onto that old relic, post links to websites or supply as much detail on performance and price of the cpu. my current cpu is a intel pentium d cpu 2.80ghz ( 2 cores) so would like a cpu that clocked higher than that, dual core or quad core, just stick it down here!

Thanks!!!

You should pretty much just buy a whole new system.

But you're in luck, if you were thinking about it and have the money... I will help you pick out parts.

When building a custom computer you will get much more performance for your dollar.

Much depends on what CPUs that motherboard's BIOS supports. If the processor socket is LGA775 then it's physically compatible up to Core 2 Quad, but like I said, BIOS support is the deal breaker here. Processors contain bugs and features that must be addressed in BIOS before system even boots. Being a Dell board, I doubt there is much support or updates available for the motherboard only. You should have on hand the make and the model of the rig that mobo was originally ripped from before you start seeking support downloads from Dell or from the Net in general.

I'd get new Mobo, CPU, and Ram, tbh. Better investment than buying a new CPU for that.

If you are going to the extent to buy a new mobo, cpu, and ram... just build a whole new computer.

And you totally messed up your vocab... hard to see what you are saying.

well its only the cpu i need to upgrade, i have 4gb 800mhz ram, nvidia gt240 1gb ddr3.
So it what everyone is saying is that my mobo can not support a new cpu? the reason i made this thread was to show you my motherboard, and ask what cpus can already fit, just want to see what my options are before i go and upgrade my motherboard. thanks.

EDIT: just got a bit more info for ya, playing on far cry 2, all settings medium apart from shading and real tree which are on high, res 1024x768, aa x4, fps around 30-35, going down to 26 when in built up areas or lots of action, on my keyboard i have a little lcd screen that displays my cpu performance, when playing it never going below 86% and averages around 95% going up to 100 sometimes, that would seem its on the brim of a bottleneck right?

Your mobo supports LGA 775 CPUs.... but your bios may not allow to get a new one.

Sounds like q6600 (core 2 quad) is the best option for that board.

you can look up your CPUs score here: PassMark Software - CPU Benchmark Charts

anything scoring higher that is still supported by your board is what you are looking for
check your mobo's manual for which CPUs are compatible.
