The M4A1 is the full automatic version and only used by Special Forces.

The M4 is semi/burst and used by regular units in the US Army.
The only difference between the M4A1 and M4 is that its trigger unit of M4A1 is modified to fire full-auto instead of the three shots bursts in M4.

Even the game Americas Army MADE by americas army seems to have got that wrong, unless they're phasing the A1 into regular use?

Why did they need to introduce 3 round bursts besides ammo conservation in the first place? AFAIK the M16A1 was full auto and it was used by the US Army.

Ammo conservation unlike PR/games in general there are no lag or or bad hit registration if you are hit your most likely un able to fight back so basically there should be no need for auto as you always should have a SAW in the team, single and burst is more then enough.

Back in Vietnam when the Americans introduced their AR-15's and the M16 it was full auto and single shot.. they soon found that the average GI would just select full auto and expend their 20 round mag. So for them to keep up with the ammo consumption they later changed it to 1/3 round shot. Its not that big of a deal really, I've never fired my C7 in anything but single shot anyways. Even on PR my rifle is only single shot.

Ammo conservation I would think is the main reason.

Other reasons I could think of might be:
-Retain weapon discipline (once someone spooks and goes full auto, everyones gonna else will do it too)
-Weapon performance (+rounds in a shorter space of time means +jamming in a shorter space of time)
-Weapon durability (weapons get worn from extended firing periods)
-Firefight dynamics (massive luls in fire output could be caused by everyone reloading 7 seconds into a firefight. This would leave a unit very open to suppression)
-The rise of the SAW (SAWs are better designed to handle the stress and capacity requirements for sustained auto-fire)

3 Round burst is a very good way to get several rounds into your target quickly, and accurately while saving ammo. And (combat arms) soldier can easily use the 3 round burst and put all 3 rounds in a softball size grouping at 25-30 yards.

Its about bad training, on full auto u can shoot singles, bursts or ur whole mag at once. Burst is only burst, except of it conserving ammo by being 'useless' I dont see any advantage.

In terms of PR, 3 burst would imo be used if

- your in a cqb zone and unless your using a cqb sight (aimpoint or iron's) a fully zoomed optic is not suitable to be used
- for massive suppressive/cover fire

Besides that it's best to use semi for pure accuracy.

The Confusion comes from designations

M4 = safe-semi-burst
M4A1 = safe-semi-full auto

The reason I heard was because when people are killed their muscles often spasm and because Vietnam era GI's didn't have the battle discipline to space themselves properly a single dead GI's hand clamping on his trigger while he fell could mean half a squad dead to his M16's automatic function.

Just what I heard.

Now that I haven't heard before! Though it kinda makes sense I guess.

The main reason I heard is simply ammo conservation, the average soldier in a firefight would just spray whole magazines at targets.

The average number of rounds per kill for normal infantrymen in Vietnam was 50,000. That gives you an idea of the problem.

The average rounds per kill for snipers was 1.2.
