US Crewman Sub-gun

Post by wood_badger »

Not really that important, but would be a neat addition. US Vehicle Crewman kits equipped with M231 Firing Port Weapon Sub-machine gun. I'll just let the pics do the talking.

No because no.

It's used in the Bradley to fire out of some ports to "suppress". Crewmen carry their own normal M4s.

Mount it on a CLAW turret then? That's what they did after covering up the side ports.

Nevermind that an M249 is far better suited for the job, with a thicker barrel.

Well they had to something with all the left over M231 in the inventory, which is why they are not Bradly only weapons now. Run 'em till they melt, then make M249s out of them.

https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f18-pr ... suggested something related to the firing-port weapon however it didn't really get ratified. At the moment, US tank crews etc. are issued with M4's according to this from Wikipedia (gasp):
For the US Army in previous years, the Abrams usually maintained the provision for storing an M16 rifle or M4 carbine inside the turret in case the crew is required to leave the tank under potentially hostile conditions; while the crewmen were supplied with the M9 Beretta pistol as a personal sidearm. Considering the current (often dismounted) role of American armored crewmen and contemporary operating environments, though, current US Army crews maintain a rifle or carbine for each crewman.
I remember someone saying 'anyone can edit Wikipedia', but who would edit it simply to lie about something like that?

It's kinda a weak argument, but crewman are using the M231 in other rides other than bradley now (anecdotal/photos).
Crews are still issued M231s along with M4s and M9s. There may be less ball-joints to screw the M231 into now, but the gun is still out there in numbers, and is being utilized.

Perhaps someone would edit a Wiki page to prove an argument on a Forum thread?? Who knows

i say that the crewman should have a differnt gun ... but there still has to be a kit with an automatic carbine :( ... like AP kit should have a short range automatic firing weapon such as the mp5 ...

Enlighten Me, Do Regular United States Infantry units commonly equip the HK Mp-5?

That document is so old it has TO&E for an M113 infantry platoon listed in it.

The only means of putting the M231 on target is by walking the tracers; the entire magazine is loaded with them. You are essentially firing the weapon from the hip; there are no sights on the weapon, and no shoulder stock. they do not even use the same round as the M16A2/M4, because it is a modified M16A1 and uses the older ammunition (optimized for 1:12 twist barrel). They specifically tell you not to use the SS109 ammunition in these weapons in the Bradley gunnery manual.

It's not going to happen, and neither is the MP5.
