[To the PRvets] If you were a Newb today. .
I'm throwing this out to all of you who have been around the block with PR.
If you could see back in time to when you were a first time player. I am sure you remember your first real legit round of Project Reality when you saw the teamplay unfolding and started feeling hooked. Thinking back to all the confusion and wonder you had for this mod; what would be your one golden piece of advice you would give yourself back then??
For me thinking about my first Kashan .7 experiences, I think mine would be: "Learn and understand the spawn system from the manual before anything else."
I think even if you die 25 times just learning to stay near your squad should be your first personal goal as a Project Reality player.
Feel free to share any rose colored nostalgia stories about your first outings in PR also.

Tactical gamer doesn't secretly hate everyone and doesn't boot everyone who tries to join if the server is almost full.
Also, understanding the deviation system.

Getting the HAT kit when there was only one available on the team, and firing it straight in front of me into the red girders on Qwai river (at processing plant)
Back then the missile was about 1m wide so you had to be standing in the open to fire it. Suffered the rage of the whole team
Learn to play as a grunt before you squad lead....too many new players ask 'HOW DOES I FIREBASE?'

After reading the manual, plug in your mic.
Now join a squad, say "Hello" and stick close to them.
Everything else will follow.

Re: [To the PRvets] If you were a Newb today. .
When I started, it was completely different, I learned flying by flying a Blackhawk into a cablepole four times before I figured out the acceleration, this happened on a modded server (before server licenses) where the BH respawned before you did so no one gave a damn.
My advice to myself back then would be 'play other maps' since for most of v0.5 I played only Basrah.
Same could go today, play some other maps rather than the same worn out popular maps like insurgency ones, Muttrah and Kashan that everyone knows inside out so there's nothing new to learn.
It seems most leave when a forest map loads because they get scared of all the trees and the dark.

I'd tell myself to get out while I still had a chance. Not only am I a long term addict, but PR has also numbed my tolerance towards other visual based stimulants. Nothing compares to my daily fix of PR.
damn, i think i need an intervention

Seriously, read the manual, join a squad, communicate with them, follow your SL's orders. That's basically everything a newbie needs to do.

I would inform myself about comms discipline. I am only just starting to keep the random chat under control. (Silly me, I played it like it was a game, to have fun. So much srs buisness in PR)
Players might be hardcoded, but that sure doesn't seem to stop anybody from trying.
The only winning move is not to play. Insurgency, that is.

i woould say my first REAL game would be 7 Gates or Ghost train back in .6 ..
but i remember my FIRST time playing PR it was on KASHAN and i spawned in at south south bunkers i believe telling the people it was my first time and i had no idea what i was doing ... they just toldme to follow them and dont run away..
but on 7 gates i first started cordinating attacks with my members to sneek through the back with ropes .. which were #9 slot in one of the normal kits at the time or getting the special forces kit and droping Slams on key points to either discract or gain acess to the under garage of the temple

Re: [To the PRvets] If you were a Newb today. .
my main advice would be to perservere [sp] with dieing unexpectedly a lot
my first few rounds on thebattlearena 24/7 back in .75 consisted of me just dieing for some really unknown reason
but i had great fun defending VCP (still without any clue as to what i was doing)
things started picking up for me and i had some awesome rounds on iGi which got me hooked on PR
main things to consider are: keep it simple - take rifleman (it's still probably my favourite infantry kit), listen to people, try not to just follow blindly - think why things are being done, if you are in a good squad with a friendly SL use the downtime (defending that fob, during that long trans journey) to ask some advanced questions (make sure to have read the manual to avoid asking basic questions) or ask what the squad is trying to acheive
open your mind to gameplay that doesn't ultimately revolve around k/d ratios.

Back in .4 you knew almost everyone who played PR and the community was way more relaxed and fun in my opinion
Then again, the gameplay of .4 can't be compared to some of the good .87~.9 rounds.
I guess ultimately, the biggest switch from most games is learning to think for the team instead of your own points

Re: [To the PRvets] If you were a Newb today. .
I am not exactly sure with which version I started but we still played vanilla maps back then If I recall right, so must be one of the earlier versions.
I also remember the VIP mode, which was fun on abadan (?) and the old vanilla map (forgot the name)
my advice would be: "use VOIP more, it will make everything even better"

I'd tell myself to go hit on a chick from another class I later found out I really liked but didn't personally know at the time.
Well, that and maybe join the tournament.
