Chinooks Float on Water

Post by DevilDog812 »

ive never heard of this, but i saw the picture on Apache Clips and read this:
The Chinook can float for 30 mins as mentioned the cargo floor is somewhat sealed up but not 100% waterproof, as long as you have all the drain plugs in and the center hook door shut you can float easily. As for shutting down they say that you can float with engines off.

Apache Clips -

pretty neat and would allow for some neat insertions. if it was ever put on a map with water that is.

I think you should be able to stuff the Chinook with boats and then get the boat on the river and ride!

I'm sure they don't have to add anything special to the chinook to make it float.

It would require the special sauce that makes the boats in PR float. Dunno how that merge would go though.

I'd have thought it'd just be a line in the vehicle's config file?

A cool edition...but not really needed.

The only maps with a big body of water and a Chinook are Qinling and Silent Eagle.

And only Qinling spawns boats near the temple. So whats the point?

Was the Chinook really needed? We already had the Merlin but nobody complained at the idea of the Chinook knowing that it could still only carry 8 players...

The point is that, as you can see, it's realistic.

It's like saying, why bother making the VN3 float... was that needed? No. Is it realistic, yes.

If the Chinook was given this capability, it adds more scenario possibilities, meaning that players and mappers can do more with the Chinook.

If it can be done, why not?

I believe this has been suggested before though.

Yes, it is technically possible, but thinking of the problems of salt water corrosion I doubt if it is done except for emergencies (and videos).

Pretty much eliminate its water damage, and make it float. All of which can be changed with a simple number value change. Realistic, probably wouldn't be used as much (Map dependent), but implement for realism sake.

Would we have an issue with submersible Chinooks? Downward acceleration + No water damage = ???

Either way, we should at least do this for a test build -- for lulz sake. ;)

Maybe give the chinook some sort of "Boat" property, to make it float. But also go on land without exploding..

Salt corrosion only is pretty easy to stop, just give the bird a rinse with fresh water after a mission. If a water extraction was Judged by pilots to be the best option available, I have no doubt they would take full advantage of the Chinooks aquatic abilities. I would also like to think that the majority of PR pilots would act the same way, if it wasn't tremendiously easier to make a water landing compaired to a ground one of course.

Oh, Dev, the boats currently don't explode on land, just become useless and expire ;)

hey, wait, the Lav and the VN-3 are both amphibious, is it possible to add that code to a flying vehicle?

the questions that need to be answered are:

-is it common used?
-does every CH-47 has the feature?
-how long can it float?
-can it float with engines off?
-can it float on water without taking any damage?
-can it float even if the engines fail?

and it would really help if somebody can provide a source, because i dont have access to the page you are linking at :)

-is it common used?
fully capable of landing on water for special operations and similar missions
dont know about this :-?
-
-
-does every CH-47 has the feature?
a special kit facilitates water operations
no
-
-
-how long can it float?
The Boeing made CH-47 Chinook can float on the water for a minimum of 30 minutes, even with the engines turned off.
30 minutes at least
-
-
-can it float with engines off?
The Chinook remains afloat even with the rotors not turning
yes
-
-
-can it float on water without taking any damage?
The Chinook is watertight and fully capable of landing on water
yes

launch customer pilots conducted system and functional checks with the aircraft as part of their orientation training. These flights included water landings on the Delaware River next to the Boeing Philadelphia factory. The Chinook is watertight and fully capable of landing on water for special operations and similar missions. The Chinook remains afloat even with the rotors not turning, and a special kit facilitates water operations.

Thats what they have engineers for they have to figure out how to stop it from corroding.

First of all they can land in water, but you can't shut off the engines because it doesn't actually float, it would sink. They just land in water for special operations. Pr only captures the role of a common soldier, so no 1337 soldiers.

If you were to read the other posts in this thread, I think you will find that your assumption is false.

I'd think it would still be possible to land on water without the problems helicopters currently experience, if all the special kit does is make it easier then one would assume it would be possible prior, though not necessarily to the same degree or with the same ease.
