Add SL-radio options to tankdrivers HUD

Post by Myru »

With the introduction of the SL-radio and the possibility of visually flagging targets on the map, teamplay has improved a lot, especially on public servers. People seem to react more to a tank-marker on the map than just "e tank e4 kp 1" in the chat.
Therefore the role of the SL has become a more tactically supporting/coordinating one, instead of him just being some kind of regular combatant with an RP in his pocket.

Suggestion:
In my opinion, drivers of armored vehicles should also be able to benefit from this new features.
The driver position already possessing a "laser-range-designator" (at least in MBTs), i belive it should be both programmable and based on real military technology to enable him to flag targets on the map like the SL with his radio. This means enabling acces to the "Set Distance" and the different "tagets buttons" in the driver's commo-rose.

Make an officer creman kit and make it the driver and it should be alright
but usally the tank should be trying to take it out rather then spotting it.

Use the comms to ask the tank column nicely 'Go Away' ;)

Technically, if this were to be implemented, the spotting options should go to the tank commander. In fact, the tank commander needs a better role in tanks overall as right now, he's just that extra guy who sits on the 50 cal.

What about for Recce vehicles? like the Canadian Coyote, or the American Bradley? They usually get paired up with Tanks, and do the spotting for the tanks... this system would work well with any armored vehicle

the driver is the commander, which is why he access to teh commander camera as well as the driver view port

on most tanks on some he's still just the commander

i'd especially like to see this for the Scimitar and BRDM-2, you never know they might get used for recon

Back to the topic: I agree. The driver/commander should be able to put down those markers. However I think that a crewman-officer being able to put markers like SL would be exploitable. You can get half infantry squad go crewman-officer and everyone can put marks... I think the map would be spammed too much...
just like the SL can only access the radio.. a Crewman officer could only access the radio from inside the vehicle so you wouldnt have 2 or 3 guys in a squad spotting things, and plus who would take the crewman officer kit if they wernt gunna operate a squad, their weapons and kit layout is horrible haha

I don't think a "crewman officer kit" is really needed, just enable the commo-rose options for spotting for players in the driver position.

Sounds like a good idea to add these functions to the vehicle commander camera.

Many modern tanks have a system similar to the PR spotting system, so this would make sense. And add to the overall gameplay.
Also, recon vehicles could finally conduct recon :D

This is a technical issue.

The new radio spotting system implemented in v0.9 uses the player rotation in the game world to determine where to place the marker.

When a player enters a vehicle his rotation becomes the rotation of the object he is controlling. Even though he can move his *camera* around, doesn't mean his rotation in the game world changes, because the vehicle is still looking forward.

Now, I say this with just my previous knowledge of how BF2 positioning works, and I might be mistaken about something, but I'm not sure. The turret could probably work better as it rotates to where the player is looking, but the tank commander is a different thing and probably won't work.

If somebody wants to try to make it work, go ahead, because I'm sure the team would like this feature in.

I can make it work in 2 different ways. I encountered this issue multiple times when I was working on my Fire Control Systems, so it's not really a problem for me. I already have all the python code written, just need to adapt it for PR.
