This was an Army solicitation for optics for the M2. It makes it more realistic that the M2 now gets optics.

I found this sentence quite funny and since this is a war game forum I will put it here. No offense to the french just a good laugh.
"Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an accordion. All you do is leave behind a lot of noisy baggage."

Hat sniping too there :p
I cant find the video link right now but Ive seen deployed 50 cal with scopes before on a firing range, looked like it was standard training.
World sniping record distance was set by a M2 with scope in Vietnam war apparently

Is PKM ammo the highest commonly used calibre by insurgents

The record was held for quite some time by U.S. Marine sniper Carlos Hathcock in 1967 during the Vietnam War, at a distance of more than 2,347 yards (2,146 m) using a scope-mounted Browning M2 .50 machine gun.

The current record is held by Canadian Rob Furlong for the longest confirmed sniper kill in combat while in Afghanistan in 2002, at a distance of 2,657 yd (2,430 metres) using a Tac-50 rifle.

AFAIK the Taliban have access to Russian/Chinese made 14.5mm machine guns which they use in a variety of roles from fire support to AAA.
