Yes as [R-DEV]Trahnlee mentioned in the PR:V announcement thread, "Aussie" forces are being developed for PR:Vietnam.

Re: Aussie Forces?
Hopefully, aswell as M16's. We used both at the later stages of our involvement in Vietnam.

The french had little to no presence in Vietnam when the US Ground combat forces arrived in 1965(to my knowledge). Australia and New Zealand were the only two nations allied with the USA that actually sent a combat commitment to Vietnam. Australia actually drafted civilians into the military during this time, as they were involved in two South East asian conflicts. The domino theory was seen as quite a real threat to Australia's regional security.
When a larger commitment came from Australia to vietnam, along side a small artillery commitment from New Zealand, the "ANZAC" forces moved from Bien Hoa, to take control of Phuoc Tuy province, building a logistics base near the R & R city of Vung Tau, and a Forward Operations base at Nui Dat. These two bases would be the home of the Australian and New Zealand troops for the duration of the war.

Have a talk to Tonnie about the voice overs, I'm sure you can use most of them for PR:V

Re: Aussie Forces?
The french we're pretty much gone after the defeat of Dien bien Phu in 1954. However, like many I've almost never heard of the Aussies during Vietnam.'[R-COM wrote:HangMan;1319768'][History Lesson]

Any numbers on the troops that we're sent? I'm guessing something around 5000-10 000 max since it wasn't much covered.
Would be a shame if it was more if you ask me, shame that there wasn't more coverage from the media and history books.

Re: Aussie Forces?
Its kind of funny that the Aussies are not more talked about. During the war they were widely considered, by NLF troops, to be much more dangerous than the Americans

Re: Aussie Forces?
Shhhhhhhh, we keep that a secret. A very well known secret at that!
But lots of people will argue that the ANZAC forces in Vietnam were probably the most combat efficient force in country.
ANZAC being the "Australian New Zealand Army Core".
Apart from the ADF and NZ forces we also had the SAS(R) who are known to all SF's around the world as the best at what they do.
But regardless, Vietnam was a horrific war and saying things such as "we were better than you" is childish.
I'm simply stating that our forces were very, very good.

Re: Aussie Forces?
The ANZAC troops quite freely regarded themselves as being far more professional troops than the US soldiers. They used a lot of sign language on patrols, rarely talking. They did not smoke nor wear aftershave to avoid being smelt out by the VC and NVA. They worked on long search and destroy operations, often not returning to a firebase or to Nui Dat for 3 weeks. Overall they were generally considered better soldiers than the americans. This is not suprising as the US Conscripted troops were alledged to be at a frightfully lower level of training to the ANZAC troopsm including "Nashos" which were the australian conscripted troops.

I agree, but I dont want to start and arguement either with some of the other members of the forum.
My Grandad was A Centurion tank gunner in the National Service, didn't get sent to Vietnam though.

Re: Aussie Forces?
I did a research topic on NZs involvement in Vietnam last year. I think we sent around 300 personnel in total, including an artillery battery, some ground troops, our SAS, medical personnel and people to train the South Vietnamese army. So I would assume the Australian contribution would be larger but similar.

Re: Aussie Forces?
Interesting, although I would think that if you're close enough to smell smoke/aftershave on someone you'd be close enough to smell their body odor but it's a good idea to minimize your scent nevertheless.[R-COM]HangMan wrote:They did not smoke nor wear aftershave to avoid being smelt out by the VC and NVA.
An Aussie Vietnam vet I talked to a few years ago mentioned that they wore hats instead of helmets, unlike the Americans. I can't recall if it was more to do with comfort or situational awareness, probably both.

Re: Aussie Forces?
Excuse my skepticism but I would think drafted civilians wouldn't really have the discipline to not smoke when forcefully sent to war... Sounds like you're putting a little too much sugar on top here.. lol
"we also had the SAS(R) who are known to all SF's around the world as the best at what they do."
I'm curious as to what that would be... SF's around the world are known to be egocentric and thinking they're the best no mather where they from lol

Re: Aussie Forces?
They were got and heavy, they carried enough shit to last a week, that extra few punds on ya noggin would count. But some Aussie did wear helmets,
Yes and the Aussies did try and loose thier scent, SAS still do it in Afganistan today. They dont shave, clean or do anything that can make then smell different, they try to smell like the environment and those in it.
If you ever go camping or hunting in certain places you can smell how pure the air is, there is no petrol fumes or the other shit that the city has floating in its air. If you live out there and become accustomed to this then you can smell things long before you can see them, especially if you're down wind. And the VC were accustomed to this.
Also a good mention I think would be usefull to the design of the Aussie troops in PR:V would be that
all the Aussie troops would wear all their gear on their back (apart from ammo, grenades etc), so when they came under fire and they hit the deck and became prone, no gear would get in their way, they could crawl and move about much easier and faster while under fire because of this, and it would be great to see this in PR:V I think.

Re: Aussie Forces?
Use google, read a book, I wouldn't be doing them any justice by trying to expain exactly what they do. And I dont think he means they didn't smoke at all but that they didn't smoke on patrol. They did smoke on base and drink, but didn't smoke drugs like some others we know about, hint hint.JohnnyTheIED wrote:
