Any place in the PR world for the good ol' Shilka?
I quite like this vehicle (I'm an old fashioned kind of guy, I like the older Cold War era stuff) and I think it would be good/more sensible for MEC than the 9K22 Tanguska (which isn't even used by any possible MEC nations.. except maybe Morocco). Of course it lacks the AA missiles and would therefore be slightly less useful, but still more than enough for anti-helicopter and ground support duty (which is really the best use of the Tanguska anyway). The offset of not having a missile armament would be helped by the fact that, because of the lack of missiles, there would be little warning of its presence until it started firing at you. Besides, the ZPU-4 (quad 23mm stationary emplacement) is quite effective save for the fact it can't move.
So yeah, would this be practical? Is there plans for it? Is there anyone working on making one?

It'd be cool to have, but it's highly likely that it has already been discussed.

OT the shilka just looks awsome though again its the whole "current usage" speech and i wouldn't know if it is still used anywhere.

Is this a suggestion?
ZPU-4 is 14.5mm. The ZU-23 is the towed 23mm and only has 2 barrels.Doedel wrote:Besides, the ZPU-4 (quad 23mm stationary emplacement) is quite effective save for the fact it can't move.

Re: ZSU-23-4
If you bring the Shilka get rid of the SA-9 and the Avenger and bring the M163 PIVADS
I highly doubt the Shilka will be brought in as there is no active radar in PR unless they use the UAV code and put it in a screen like the GPS and only let the gunner see it. But like i said highly unlikely that it will be put in.

Yes it does just like the Ghs-30-2 means two barrels for the MiG-29 XDHitperson wrote:well the -4 in "ZSU 23-4" means 4 barrels doesn't it??

Re: ZSU-23-4
Seems reasonable, but the anti-infantry part worries me. Radar assistance seems fine, but I think only "Help" from radar would be reasonable. Radar locking is pretty much like having a AA-Missile shot at you without a lock tone. It sucks. Although I like the addition for new ground to air assets. The M163 VADS seems pretty reasonable, I'd love to see it instead of a Linebacker, but the question is, do we still use them?

Re: ZSU-23-4
This is true, but the ZSU-23-4 is the self propelled system (hence the S), as eddie stated the towed system (ZU-23-2) is only ever seen with two barrels, not four. He was simply correcting Doedel on his misidentification of the ZPU-4.Hitperson wrote:well the -4 in "ZSU 23-4" means 4 barrels doesn't it??
ZPU-4:

ZU-23-2

ZSU-23-4

As you can see the ZSU-23-4 does indeed have four barrels. Its also attached to a modified PT-76 hull.
Why? Thats what they're used for in reality. Also bare in mind that the Shilka is pathetically poorly armoured - 15mm at its thickest point sauce which means it is not proof against the M2 AP Ball ammuntion used in BLUFOR HMGs sauce, let alone its vulnerabiltiy to real anti-tank weapons.Seems reasonable, but the anti-infantry part worries me.
Combat experience across the world has shown that rapid fire autocannon are the weapon to use in urban warfare (add to that the Shilka's huge capability to elevate and depress its guns and you've got a winner. Only problem is the light armour). Seriously, the Russian Army didn't commision BMPT for no reason.
No, the M163 was entirely replaced by the Avenger, Linebacker (which its self is in the process of retirement Air Defence Artillery Magazine) and Stinger MANPADs Sauce. The United States Army does not posesses any form of SPAAG (unless you really want to count the M3P .50 on the Avengers) at the current time. The M163 VADS seems pretty reasonable, I'd love to see it instead of a Linebacker, but the question is, do we still use them?
Yes it is. A resuggestion, infact linky 1 linky 2Is this a suggestion?
I got those two on the very first page of searching Shilka.
Remember folks, suggestions go in the suggestion forum. Additionally, before making a "new" suggestion do read through the *** thread and make thorough use of the search function provided on the forums, thank you.

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.
