Build me a PC :P

Post by Gaz »

OK, just looking for a tower unit. I used to build PCs until about 18 months ago, and have not stayed current with the latest hardware advances. I'd be interested in seeing what sort of spec I can get for a gaming PC. Monitor will be a 22inch 1080 LCD monitor. Spending ceiling is £800.

Please advise :)

Give it around a week or so,new 6 core cpus will hit the market (Phenom x6).
Preliminary reports suggest that it beats out i7 is many cases.

Something like:
Phenom x6 1055T (turbo)
(need to wait for the offical prices,
but I hear it's around.....................$200)
890gx/fx.......................................$150-200
ddr3.............................................$100
3x (SATA3) hard drives for RAID5.. $100 each
Radeon 5850 ................................$300

I'll agree with Socket that the new X6's are worth waiting for, they have the potential to give an incredible price/performance ratio, however if you aren't going to use 6 cores (Games are only really just starting to use 4) then you might be better off going with a quad and spending the cash elsewhere (Can always upgrade to a hex core later if needed.)

Main use of the system?

There already is a 6 core amd out. I think its called Phenom "Istanbul". But i heard they making a new one also. I'll probally get one in a few years when that price comes down though.

For monitors I have one of these, 22" 1080p. There is very mild ghosting on fast moving objects (only noticable if you're looking for it). Colour reproduction is pretty good, though my experience of LCDs is minimal.

Using todays hardware assuming you already have an OS (and that the monitor you mention is already in your possession).

Not an AMD expert, however I know the 955BE is a good chip, although I would do a bit of research on the motherboard before buying.

Availability of 5850s is abysmal, so you could either pay more and get a 5870 or fall back to a 5830/5770. Unless you are doing CUDA intensive tasks (Folding/GPU rendering) I can't recommend one of the new nVidia cards due to price, and their old cards are EOL so are going expensive aswell.

Only a single 1TB HDD included, not sure if you would need more/less storage or want to run a RAID array, but if you do then falling back on the GCard would be the obvious place to keep it within budget.

Every motherboard nowadays has built in networking, if it doesn't it must be severely lacking in other areas too.

Soundcard is onboard, I looked at them and couldn't bring myself to recommend anything that wouldn't break the bank and still be worth getting, Xtreme Audio gets pretty pitiful reviews (From people that have experience in more high end gear), and the Xonar DS doesn't have Dolby Headphone. The Xonar DX is too much to put in at £60, same goes for the Xtreme Gamer/Titanium.

However, looking at Gaz's current system specs according to his profile, he already has an X-Fi Titanium so can just shove that in this new build.

@Gaz - From looking at your current spec on your profile, you have a few options that you could use (i.e use AM2+ and use your current RAM, re-use old PSU, use the cash savings to get an i5/i7 rig possibly with a 5870 if your budget is slightly flexible).

If you want more specifics, PM me/Socket mate and we'll be able to spec up something more suited to your needs at the cheapest possible price and work around any more info you can give.

I forgot to look at it,used to the (almost) universal "windows 2000" in the system specs.
Seems that it's only the video card that needs upgrading,5850 should do the trick.
Arma 2 uses around 700mb of video ram for the 1280x1024 resolution,so the 1GB is
really needed. Some 5870 have 2048 of video ram, might be hard to find one but would be the
best option for high resolution/multi-monitor setups.
You can add a 3rd 19" monitor (must have display port input) for a 3 monitor gaming/setup (ATI Eyefinity).

Good info and clever thinking on looking at my PC specs on my profile. However, currently I am gaming on an Acer Aspire 9635 (Nvidia 9600M GS 512 Go version), and the only change being the OS upgrade to Win7 Ultimate, from Vista. The PC on my profile was nicked by my ex so yeah, heh.

I'm happy with onboard networking that mobos have, and when it comes to sound, atm I would be happy with the onboard.

Ouch, that sucks a little bit haha.

In that case I can't see much else other than either my first spec or this one (Unless Socket can point out something glaringly obvious)

Image

Again I'm assuming you have an OS (Based on you saying about the Win7 upgrade for the lappy) although if you need to accommodate one, then drop the GCard down to a 5830/5770 and you should be golden.

Personally, I'd go with the i5 spec. Looking at a few reviews, the 750 and the 955BE trade blows here and there, but the i5 can overclock further (Aftermarket HSF required, specced mobo should be good up to at least 3. 8) and generally seems to come out ontop at stock speeds (Bear in mind the 955BE's stock speed is more than the i750's).

Again, shout if you want more info/specifics.

Cpu:

Phenom X6
1055t and 1090t,the latter is (multiplier) unlocked,(like Intel extreme editions) which makes
it very tunable.Turbo kickes in when 3 cores or less are active,PR for both BF2, and Arma 2 should see some benefits (arma 2 especially)
