Give the sniper the abilty to spot targets with the sniper rifle.

Post by Cassius »

Yeah, make the sniper rifle kind of like a radio with some stripped functions, like give him the ability to set a contact distance and the target when he has the sniper rifle equipped.

Why not just give the sniper a radio so he can do his job correctly and not just 1337ubersnip0rz people.

I belive no radio for a sniper at least encourages playing with a spotter. Sadly, people are hardcoded. Experienced sniper teams tend to get a spotter anyway while those 1-man-locked sniperzooordz-l33t teams could be more useful.
On the other hand making them more usefull would encourage to do l33t sniping in a 1-man locked squads. Meh. :(
I'm not fully convinced.

it's a shame that the spotter kit has been refused i still think it would make being a sniper better and encourage more teamplay instead of lone wolf sniping.

No - his spotter does that.

Ahem

Modern day snipers have several roles, they come under the category of ISTAR or just STAR if you're not special. ISTAR means Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance. They're job varies depending on the situation. In basic terms they can be acquiring Intelligence via Surveillance and recce, or giving accurate fire support with their rifles, by taking out high priority targets, such as enemy snipers, commanders, and Heavy Weapon specialists.

ISTAR units in the British Army are usually 6 strong, 3 spotters and 3 snipers. They work in pairs, with one spotter and one sniper in each. The spotter will call out targets for the sniper, using a system with better optics than the sniper's scope. He will be able to tell the sniper elevation and range, from there - along with knowledge or judgement on wind speed and direction - the Sniper and Spotter will be able to work out what "setting" to have his scope set to. It can take a minute or so to make one shot. They can also work in the role of Reconnaissance, in this role they will use both the sniper's scope and the spotter's optics to gather detailed information about the enemy, sending what they know back to Zero via a radio. it is usually the Spotter who will have the radio, as the sniper may be required to make a shot if the enemy is threatening (most modern sniper rifles are also silenced).

That's a very simple over view of the role of the Modern sniper, and I hope it allows you to understand the role slightly better.

Spotters are fine and well, but there are only 31 to 32 people to play with and I feel bad to take away one more guy so he can cover me. Also its kind of boring if nobody tries to sneak up on me and lastly the sniper can spot his own targets pretty well, it aint like the spotter has an ridiculously oversized binocular you cant mount on a rifle like irl.

GTLD. Much higher zoom.

Also, I always find the "Spotter is boring" a poor excuse, and frankly if you think that a spotter is there purely to stop people sneaking up on you, well, you don't get the point.

best snipers I've ever seen always have a good spotter, usually the same one every time.

Huh. I find sniper to be a lot more boring than spotter.

aye, i agree with working with a spotter. sometimes i say 'yo how far's that?' but others i can pretty much guess. most things are usually within 600m, so you don't need to compensate much.

Lol? How come I can't think of any that are used in regular service. IE no SpecOps/SPETSNAZ. IIRC the Spatsnaz use a silenced assault rifle modified as a sniper rifle.

Good point but this isnt real life. A spotter also tells the sniper how to adjust his fiering seen as he sees the bullet impact etc. and again both have more or less the same scope. I dont think with a spotter that many more targets are spotted.

Also I read all the time how players whished that people who go sniper would spend more time on doing recon and less time going for kills, so I think that would be a quite welcomed addition.

That's what they use. "Spotting Scope". I think it was suggested but I don't know where did that end up at?

Also, for your sniper fans and who doubt what they do...
This are SF sniper.

Guys, when a new player comes, just answer his question and go on your merry way, instead of going berserk! It's THAT simple! :D

coderedfox has a Great point .. why make a NEW kit when the SL can just play as the spotter??? SL can already mark targets so the sniper can see where the targets are ... soo why not just play it the way it is now? ahah i DO think that sniper teams should have a small rethink on how they should be operated ..... not many poeple do it RIGHT but when they do its usefull Sort of ....
