firstly i have been playing pr since the beginning and it has ruined all first person shooters for me nothing else is like PR. the team have experimented with some great ideas which have gone through the fire and came out smelling of roses
i have been studying the Vietnam war for over twenty years and miniature wargameing Vietnam for ten years
This could be a dream mixture. i didn’t bother playing battlefield Vietnam because it bothered me that north Vietnam had vehicles jets and aircraft. PR has proved beyond doubt a good game can be had with one side having all the heavy fire power and still be even if played properly.
why am i writing this after all you guys seem to know what you are doing, well even now i still find out stuff about the war which i never knew. There is lots of information out there but sometimes that information can skew the perception of the war
i don’t really recommend you use the movies for inspiration too much. Hue city was far more beautiful both before and after the marines has been through it than in full metal jacket which was filmed in the isle of Mann in the uk. the IA drang valley in we where soldiers was filmed in California. Vietnam was the most filmed and photographed war in history ever and is the best place to look for inspiration.
i will offer you my help if you have any questions i or my vietnam wargames forum members will proberly be able to advice you i will link it later as they have a lot of good knowledge.
i also offer my services as an artist for conception or whatever i will link my deviant web page as well
of the top of my head here are a few of my ideas for what i would like to see in PR VIETNAM
1 Lots of insurgency maps
2 thick jungle
3 short visibility and walking only in thick jungle and very short sprints (why becuase in vietnam the americans walked on trails because it was faster and because it was the only way to find the vc/nva who would then ambush them )
4 the vc and nva are able to build bunkers and machine gun nests so they can make good ambushes and mortar pits
5 weapons caches as well as being hidden in hamlets where hidden in the country side in hidden bunkers , termite mounds and under large tree trunks. as well as caches there could hidden vc bases rice caches radios and evan vc tax collectors
6 grunts should have zippos to burn down huts which could be penalized if there is no cache found
7 no American snipers. generally the Americans didn’t use them except the marines near the DMZ
8 the VC didn’t have snipers either they just left a guy with a rifle to snipe with out a scope
9. Player controlled artillery which needs to be radio controlled and adjusted by another player and remember no artillery is allowed to land closer than 1000m from a village
( when i run my game i give the american players a fixed amount of artillery so they can use some of it to prep a landing zone or save it just in case)
10 the A1 skyraider and remember no bombs or napalm near a village without permission
11 a night time attack on an american fire base. flares for light, sappers with satchel to destroy bunkers and destroy the wire. fast spawns for the NVA/VC
12 THE MEKONG DELTA. mangrove swamps, rivers canals streams endless paddies and hamlets. sampans pbrs river monitors and ATC's to move the troops of the 9th infantry around looking for the Vietcong
maybe the VC players as well as defending caches can attempt to move their supplies from one area to another without being caught by a boat or a sea wolf gunship hunting as they cross the waters in sanpans.
13 hue city need i say more
14 Happy Valley. was a long valley in 2 corps the 10st airbourne and the 1st cavalry in 65 both had a good go at clearing out the vietcong out of the hundreds of little hamlets surrounded by paddie fields and patches of forest and elephant grass. a great place for airmobile as the first cav taxied the men around from village to village
15 elephant grass both short and long 2' to 10'
16 rubber plantations
17 VC and NVA kept in separate maps.
18 air mobility maps with no ground vehicles just helicopters and maybe some maps with no way into the game except via helicopter ie the IA drang valley
19 i am going to ask the impossible now. bot controlled villagers
20 the nva and vc dont have vehicles unless its the easter offensive or 1975
i am going to stop now
the vietnam wargames forum of which i belong and are a bunch of really helpfull blokes who have some have great knowledge and put me straight many a time. you could find thema great source for quick reliable information
• Index page
a photo report of one of my company level games i run the Vietcong like a games master they vc are never shown unless seen so the american players are hopeing they are not the platoon that find the vc the hard way

Re: a rather long suggestion
it is more for atmosphere i admit but it would aid the VC players and help counter act american fire power. after all it was the american war machines attitude tawards the civillian population which lost them the war
its more for atmoshere and i wouldnt expect it to be done even if it could.
however how much better would al basrah be if there where a few civillian bots who jump into a car and drive around it would make the suiside cars terrrifying.

Re: a rather long suggestion
Unfortunately, every bot added ingame reduces the number of players you can have on the server. If that were not the case, we would have true civilians in regular PR.
Thanks for posting, definitely some good stuff in there
