IED concealment

Post by AnimalMother. »

Inspired by the 'insurgent big rock' idea: I opened the thread thinking this was what it was going to suggest this.

Instead of a big rock used for road blocks, a smaller rock (easily carriable by one person) that can be used to conceal ieds/mines/grenade traps.

what i was thinking is something possibly for the collaborator in which they deploy/drop the rock. then the sapper can place the explosive in the rock (or whatever is used, could just be garbage bags etc) to simulate it being underneath or it being a 'fake' rock.

i think that the collaborator having this ability might not work too well (as helping plant an IED must make them a legit target) meaning people wouldn't use the feature but you could give it to any class other then the sapper (to promote a little bit of teamwork).

Or maybe even better, just make the IED look like its buried in the ground but leaving a dark mark on the ground, and the IED is under it

God damn IEDs are hard enough to spot already, give BLUFOR a break.

I'd very much support IEDs being harder to see

however I#d also want other changes,

remove IED kits from the spawn screen, instead have them on caches and main base

have the same deploy time and requirements on deployment as a AT mine <- rather than toss and run.

mentioning AT mines in this context, a spawnkit should still have them to keep things balanced

The arty IED used by Insurgents, Milita and Taliban is partially buried in the ground (little brown mound) but it can only be placed on the ground. The smaller IED shows because it can be attached to ceilings, walls and other structures where it could not be buried. Since the smaller one is anti-infantry, not anti-vehicle I don't think being able to see it in the road is the real problem. The player should place them in a more infantry specific area, where there will be plenty of hiding places.

Look at the link he provided at the OP.

AFAIK, big rock means SOMETHING like a rock that is big. But I could be wrong.
Guys, when a new player comes, just answer his question and go on your merry way, instead of going berserk! It's THAT simple! :D

Unless there is a way for the opposition to identify IEDs they should not be concealable.

Why? The whole purpose is an unexpected ambush and is completely realistic.

We talked about this and even tried a few POC of the idea in the early stages of getting the insurgents into PR, around the beta stages of v0.4 iirc, using things like road cones, boxes etc.

The big problem with using a placeable object to try and conceal an IED or any object ingame, all it really dose is make the IED or w/e the player is trying to hide MUCH easier to see and spot.

Why? Well many reasons why really.

The first reason is that we can only make so many objects to conceal an IED with ingame. At first players might get fooled by thinking this road cone, box, dead dog etc is nothing more than just something put in the map and may die as a result. But after playing for a bit, epically after setting your own IEDs and seeing what concealments you have got to play with, players quickly and easily learn what objects are used to hide IEDs etc and if they see that object they know its just an IED and run.

The next big thing is players also learn the maps very well and as such, anything placed by a player which is not normally there is very easy to spot. For example if you know there was no road cones on this street the last 50 times you walked down it, and suddenly there was one there, you suddenly know something is pretty fishy when the map starts off excatly the same every time you play it and now its different.

We found the best way for the IED to be hid was to make the IED for starters small, so it could then be hid inside or next to objects already on the maps. For example you can go upto some undergrowth boxes or rocks in the street and place the IED inside of them.

So ye, that's why we didn't go down that rout.

i would hate to have it as a special kit. i like getting them easily, especially when it is easy to die on insurgency.

I lol'd....

The whole point of an IED is for it NOT to be seen.... So I really don't get the point... The Mappers have been gracious enough to put rocks and bushes on main roads, so thanks to them I haven't had any trouble placing IEDs. Just put them on a rock and it's invisible to everyone... Even you!

And locking this for resuggestion. Tho I do like the idea of a pyramid of rocks like above , but only if we had to make them ourselves ^^
