Vehicle Suggestion: Cruise Control

Post by Dude388 »

Well my suggestion isn't really "cruise control" exactly...but something very similar.

What I'd like to see is some means of allowing vehicles to move at one constant speed without having to pulse the forward key. Unfortunatly...the only options now for most vehicles is either full speed or stop.

The purpose of this is to provide some degree of cover for moving infantry. If possbile it could be applied to the CONTROL key and be toggleable to allow a fixed max speed. I understand you can do this now...but it's a pain to have to constantly pulse the gas to avoid pulling ahead or falling behind the infantry your trying to cover.

For example, the map is Karbala and you are on the US team. You and your squad are about to advance into the city via the east bridge. Your current assets include 1 humvee for transport and limited fire support. You wish to use hour humvee as cover and thanks to the cruise control system implimented your driver can easly match your infantry crouch speed without constant pulsing of the gas.

This is just one example, but it could be used by tanks/APCs to provide mobile infantry cover as well.

I'm not home to test it, but could you bind your throttle on the joystick as a secondary button for land/sea vehicles to achieve the same effect as a jet or chopper?

+1 for an awesome suggestion. When I walk I hit 'L' for squad chat and just leave it open and it works as a cruise control while walking, never tried it with a vehicle.

Rudder petals make for a more immerse alternative to a joystick throttle.

I really like this idea. It would really add a new element of armor support for infantry in cities. Have the APC slowly roll down the street looking for that sniper or you could really use it for roll playing purposes.

That's what everyone really needs to get, a foot pedal to control the speed of your vehicle. I know a few people who have them and find them really good.

Biggest problem is they aint cheap. To get them you really need to get a Steering wheel and Acceleration Pedal combo package which for the most point you also need to have the Steering wheel plugged in also to use it. It's also hard to find any foot pedals on there own other than rudder pedals for aircraft but they can also easily be setup for the job and tbh should do the job just as well, it just wont be quire the same as driving a normal car thou since you would be using your left foot for forwards and right foot for reverse. The good thing about rudder pedals thou is you can also use them in aircraft very well :D

I've been considering getting these Saitek Rudder Pedals for a bit now.

Image

Can get them for around £65 now which aint too bad, thou still more expensive than a real chap steering wheel and accelerator combo but I doubt there quality or if you can use only the foot pedals, thou some people may also want to drive with a steering wheel.

The biggest problem with putting in a keyboard speed control is its just not piratical other than for long journeys with no combat in them. As soon as you need to start changing speed a lot its just becomes more of a problem than a feature.

EDIT: god damn ninjas!

EDIT: I'm also going to get thous rudder pedals now in fact hehe, I've put it off for long enough now :p

I saw a house with power operated blinds (and played with them hehe) and the idea behind thr controls for those would work well on a keyboard. What it is is three buttons, up, preset and down. Up makes them retract, down makes them close and preset will stop the blinds where they are currently at (when in motion) to keep it there. If the are not moving then it moves the blinds to where they were when you last presses preset. Also, If you press down when the blinds are going up, they will stop, and vice versa.

Yes I am aware of the CCC (or Chat Cruise Control as it's better known ;) ). However that is better for times where you need to move in a single direction with no need to turn even slightly. I've used it before to simulate what I'm suggesting here.....but it's just too unreliable as a true means to limit your speed.

What I suggest wouldn't require much, just when CONTROL is toggled ON the max speed your vehicle can reach is halfed (or by whatever amount is needed to have it match infantry speed).

The only real issue I see with this is how to make the vehicle maintain this speed on an incline, or transitioning from an incline to a level surface (or vice versa).

if you can plug it into your PC and your OS recognises it then sure, just once you have installed it on your PC go to your ingame controls and click on forwards speed and press the throttle down, and then you can use the backwards speed as the brake or w/e you like.

If you have a joystick and throttle, bind your throttle to the key.

You won't regret it rhino. Icredible piece of kit. Just crank the tension in the cords up to the max possible and the required application of force feels almost spot on for a GA A/C.
Thats what i've found at least from my simulator time vs. my real time. Had a go with the CH pedals and IMO they didn't seem to put up enough resistance.

quite frankly I think we need to approach vehicle speeds differently.

we currently have, fast and faster, unless you are like me and use a 3rd piece of hardware (my joystick Y axis is my vehicle throttle, its pretty good, so I let go of the joystick and it automatically stops)

it should be

slowish - the game equivalent of 30mph, and faster without limits on how long you can boost for.

That way you can move at a safe speed, or at a fast speed. I don't ever need to go fastish, since my gunner can't engage and I can't manouvre, I need to go really fast to avoid stuff or really slow to negotiate obstacles or allow my gunner to engage while moving.

Though using a joystick/throttle or anything is the best thing for gamers to do really.

Yea, I've been thinking about something along those lines as well.
It's a fairly simple solution for those without pedals or a throttle. Problem is that the players that does have stuff like that wouldn't be able to drive fast without some special key bound to the boost.

Give all vehicles infinite "Sprint". Sprint would be the max speed the vehicles are now, and regular would be a slow "walk pace"
