New rig : Programmes randomly crashing + Random BSOD's

Post by Jaymz »

Two weeks ago, my new rig began been acting up. Firefox, xfire, vuze and more have been randomly crashing and I've gotten multiple BSOD's. An obvious culprit would be my overclocked cpu, however, my temps are ok and all the crashes have occurred during very easy going use like web browsing or even looking at .txt files in one case.

Bare in mind, I had my new rig for two months with no problems at all. This specifically started two weeks ago.

System Specs

OS : Windows 7 64-bit Home

CPU : Intel i7 920 overclocked to 4.0ghz
GPU : ATI Radeon 5870 (updated to latest drivers today, still had another BSOD 5mins ago....)
RAM : Corsair XMS3 x 6gb
HD1 : OCZ Vertex SSD 60gb
HD2 : Samsung F3 1TB
Sound Card : X-fi Supreme2
Motherboard : Asus Rampage2

Link below contains dmp files for all BSOD's over the last two weeks.

If you're a bit careless OC'ing without considering RAM strain, that could very well be your problem. Not sure how far you're going above factory,
Are you modifying voltages etc when clocking?
Try running Memtest86 and see what you get.

Anyway, if not try clocking it down and see if the problem persists. That way you atleast narrow it down.

The OC imo wont be the problem, although time will tell with the error codes from the BSOD.

The system has been solid with no changes for well over a month, with stress tests etc.

Well, it's an idea. The symptoms are typical, and overclocking in my experience could start acting up even though it's worked fine at first.
It could anyway be a memory issue, so i would check that - seeing memtest will confirm either way quick with high accuracy.
BIOS update is could also be an experiment, im not familiar with your equipment but if you buy a gen1 high end mobo they often come buggy. Again, just an idea.

Re-seat RAM and video card, you've just got to go through the process of elimination as to what is causing it.

Open the start menu and type "memory" you should get an option of the Memory Diagnostics Tool, open that and tell it to restart your PC and check for problems. See if that comes out with anything.

1.
Run the prime95 blend test over night, see if it passes. It will test ram and cpu.
Make sure the cooling is good before torturing it all night (8 hours+)

2.
For RAM specific tests burn any Ubuntu Linux CD image (iso), boot from it and run memtest
from it.
Select test #5,and run it at least 10 times. If the ram is faulty it should give errors pretty fast,
2-3 passes.

3.
Next time get a real cpu from AMD :p

bump,

It was one of my RAM sticks going fubar. It is now completely fubar and not even recognized by the system so I took it out and voila....no more bsod's. When I tested it with memtest, there were 959 errors

Currently in talks with OCUK about getting a new stick, hopefully they don't make me send all three back leaving me RAM'less....

Unfortunately they will most likely want all 3 back as the memory is sold as a kit, at least that's what they wanted me to do with my Corsair 4GB kit (I ended up buying the same kit from Amazon (Cheapest at the time) and then asking for a refund from OcUK)

Yeah, they want all three sticks back. Currently don't have internet at home anyway so I may as well....
