Skiing in the BF2 engine?
I'm working on the yet to be announced Finnish faction for PR, and was wondering if it's possible to ski in the BF2 engine, as in having the skis in the players inventory? If not in the inventory, atleast have the player spawn the skis just like the rally point, or something? Or make the skis a spawnable vehicle to main and to FOBs.
I know that skis were used in the BF1942 mod: Finnwars, as a vehicle that spawned at main.
But the whole idea of skis is to have them available at all times, make it so that you have to pick it up to use it again (like the grappling hook). Skis would increase the speed of the player to 200% without using energy, like in sprint. Skis could have a deploy / undeploy time of like 2-5 seconds.
Any thoughts?
Edit: Skis would ofcourse only be used on the future winter maps for the Finnish faction. (and why not the norwegians, but the idea is to have them finn's only just so that the finn's are different in some way)

Well, it should be possible to have the skiis in the inventory spawn a vehicle or something.. or you could use the commrose I guess. But the problem would be de-spawning the vehicle -- maybe make it blow up after exited or something? (no explosion effect)

I imagine it can be done. If I'm not mistaken, FH2 has some kits where you throw down the weapon (like an ammo bag) and then enter it. Some values would obviously have to be tweaked but it should be possible.
Here is a video of something Salmonella did which is the same thing.

Re: Skiing in the BF2 engine?
This would be pretty cool, a huge snow/forest map against the Russians or something.
It could simply be a vehicle that spawns and which you can get out of. Come into contact, simply press E and get 'out of the vehicle' to fight. Obviously the skiis could be destroyed, but it wouldn't be a violent explosion but simply the 'ski vehicle' vanishing.
I'm sure it could be coded so they can be put with every kit when you spawn in, so for each player spawning in a 'ski vehicle' spawns under him, and is destroyed whenever he dies so they don't litter the map.

Unfortunately, using a skis as a vehicle would mean that the operator, if shot, could not be resuscitated.

I don't really see a big problem there, since the skis are just for transport (high mobility inf) it's not like you fight while skiing. Yea, sure the guy on front could get shot but i can live with that.[R-CON]ReadMenace wrote:Unfortunately, using a skis as a vehicle would mean that the operator, if shot, could not be resuscitated.

E: ps. Is it possible to drag the ski troops from a transport vehicle? (It's a common tactic in the finnish military to drag the ski troops from a Sisu NA-110 / NA-140 a.k.a "NASU")

Simple answer, No.NautaFIN wrote:I don't really see a big problem there, since the skis are just for transport (high mobility inf) it's not like you fight while skiing. Yea, sure the guy on front could get shot but i can live with that.

Long answer, maybe. The Georgian conflict mod has maybe accomplished a way to airlift vehicles so something similar might be able to be done for towing them but I SERIOUSLY doubt it.

Re: Skiing in the BF2 engine?
no, you can not even do such a pair of vehicles where one towes another (otherwise the brits would most likely allready have something like the Hägglunds/Viking
yes python code could maybe do it, but that could cause sync losts and client crashes

Don't mention the Georgian Conflict mod because then they will automatically accuse you of stealing their features.[R-MOD]octo-crab wrote:Simple answer, No.

Re: Skiing in the BF2 engine?
Im still sorta suspicious of the whole skiing idea working because using the skiis would work just like any vehicle in game...
Which means no much animations for the character and it would quite simply just stand there on top of the skiis. Correct me if im wrong as i would certainly be very interested to see skiis in PR
