LAT vs. chinook/other chopper

Post by ComradeHX »

How much damage will a LAT do against choppers?

Will it be worth it to shoot the chopper with LAT?

Does a hit on cockpit kill the pilot? (I know that hitting the inside of Huey will)

I shot down a couple choppers on muttrah with the LAT. If you got the shot, i say take it.

It depends where you hit. I've shot a Mi-8 with a LAT before only to have it fly away on dark smoke, but I'm pretty sure no LAT can destroy a chopper instantly like a TOW or HAT can.

from experience on both ends, the LAT does have a good chance to fatally wound the crew or damage the chopper enough to force it to land on its way home.

If I see any chance of shooting a chopper with a LAT, I would take it.
It might not kill it, but it would definitely damage it a lot.

A lat will not always immediately kill a chopper, but they certainly do enough damage to disable them most of the time (often killing the crew if they're disabled at speed or at a height). From personal experience, lats will kill hueys, blackhawks, cobras, apaches, chinooks, little birds and mi7s.

The smallest of the choppers (littlebirds), will die immediately, while the largest of the choppers seem to have a chance of being disabled depending on how lucky you are (or where you hit it). I am sure the rest of the choppers fit somewhere between the two. So in conclusion, a lat shot is definitely bad news for any chopper you manage to hit.

LAT is effective aginst choppers becuse they are lightly armored vehicles. I'm not sure about their accurary on fast moving targets but with a little practice I think you will hit and maybe shoot down couple of them.

The best place to hit is the open areas (side doors) where the blast is likely to hit the pilot and either kill them or cause a bleed that makes a safe return to main unlikely.

You need crazy luck

I put a Huey on white smoke once with a LAT. that's my story :-P

the LAT or RPG can critically damage choppers.

1 hit and you will be crash landing in 20 seconds.

It really sucks on Operation Archer when your going 600 KM in the chinook and BAM!

An RPG right into the side of your chopper.

The Little Bird and the little Euro copter both explode on impact with a LAT, at least it did in .9

Depends on where you shoot them. Yes I have had instances where one RPG pretty much finished my Chinook, had just landed to drop troops off and was forced to bail out since I couldnt lift off again. Other times ive gotten hit by rpgs even on the move and my Chinook pretty much shrugged off the hit as I just continued on my way.

The Chinook at least, will take in a hit from a LAT I believe, from my experience in 0.9, I experimented with the Havoc's 27A2 on a local server to see what helos could take in how many number of hits, the Littlebird took in about 8 hits before being destroyed, the Apache taking in about 12, and the Chinook, almost 20. From my experience, the Chinook will take in much more rounds of any type before going down, and in my long experience of filling my server flying transport Huey's on Muttrah, it'll take in a LAT.. still go on.. but not for very long.

Most choppers, including the chinook will go down if u hit around the cockpit/belly area. In the cockpit area, its fairly risky, since the RPG/shell vs. glass bug is still not fully fixed. You might make the shot, but the bug will render it useless. The still, the best place to shoot is in its belly, since it is has a large area, and it might also kill people inside(happened to me, on archer, i shot RPG from under the chinook, hit its belly and about 3-4 people died and their bodies fell ot of the chopper. The chinook continued though.

if your really good or lucky you can kill the pilots of a aircraft with a grenade from a grenade launcher i once on the rt vehicle training map that was on my clans training server killed a guy piloting a v-22 osprey with a m203 launched 40mm that struck the cockpit.

Heres goes one of another Bob's investigation
(yes I know, I DO have time to lose :razz :)

Sorry for the wall of text...

This is what its actually used in game.

Those value are based on a regular LAT, like AT4, RPG-26, M72A6, but NOT the RPG-7 with regular and Tandem warhead. Simply multiple the output damages (in %) by one of those values listed below

RPG-7 = 0.93
Tandem = 1.7

Those are also based on an impact below 600m (cause further, the projectile start to lose its initial impact strength)

"Critical after" mean that after a specific amount of damages, its start to lose 10 hitpoints each second.
Over 70%, it will explode few seconds if not instantly after the impact.

For recon helos and jets, only one shot is needed...

EDIT: I tested other vehicles and I found something a bit strange, but I didnt post it in the "bug section" because it look like an exploit... So if a DEV is interested, please PM me.
