need advice on hardware for a possible first build.

Post by Hitperson »

ok guys i have been looking at building a PC and have come up with the following list of parts.

Image

what i need to know is will that setup support a GTS250 at all??

and is it a sensible build for a sub £600 budget??

E: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/102994
swapped the PSU for that.

It should

The GTS250 doesn't pull that much power, and Coolermaster is a pretty good brand.

and for 600euros I'd say you can't do much better. You could probably go cheaper with AMD parts, but not better.

A thing to remember is a GTS250 is a rebrand of an 8800GT...which consumed more power than a McDonalds... An HD5750 is about the same price in the US as a GTS250, and it throws punches that eventually drop a GTS250. The Sapphire Vapor-X HD5750 is what I have, it's uber leet :D
Steam?
Pissed about BF3 not having mod tools, also?

Have fun when the entire build blows up on you. NEVER skimp on a PSU.

No.

9800GT is roughly an 8800GT, but the 9 card runs cooler, uses less energy and has tripple SLI.

The GTS250 is a rebrand of a 9800GTX+, but made to use less power (1x 6-pin instead of 2x 6-pin connectors. So no, it doesn't consume more power than a McDonalds.

Also, read reviews and have a source ready when you give information, it shows here that the GTS250 and 5750 trade blows at each other, with no clear winner. Add to that the fact HP has already bought the GTS250, 2nd hand at a price that will be much lower than a 5750, it's all kinda void.

9800GT is a 8800GT with a 55nm dye as opposed to an 65nm on the 8800GT.

tbh Hit. If you could afford it a Cosair PSU would work nice ;) one of their 450's would be plenty for a build like that.

I spent a while looking for comparisons, and it never occurred to me to look at the fabrication proccess haha. Cheers for clearing that up Fuzzy :)

well currently the price of the quote is above £600 now as i changed the mobo to a p55

if i can scrape some more cash together when it comes to buying i will spring for a better PSU.

You'd be better getting a slightly less expensive mobo and getting a better PSU in the long run, because if you cheap out on the PSU and it craps out it has the capability of taking everything with it.

fair enough.

i'll see how much more expense a better 550watt PSU will be.

E: i have a query regarding this PSU - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/124922

seems to have pleanty of 5 star reviews.

Actually the only thing i heard right about the 9800GT's and the 250GTS is the person saying the 250gts is a 9800gtx+

And no the 9800GT is a 65nm and the die size total is 330mm2.
If i'd remember how to add pics i'd show you GPU-z, because i actually own a 9800GT.

And no the 9800GT isn't a 8800 GT, they perform closely together and are generally the same card but the 9800GT runs cooler mostly faster, use alot less power and has power saving features.
Do not say it the opposite because i actually own the two cards.

To the Main poster.
DO NO SKIP ON THE PSU, You might as well buy a 600 watt PSU.
There are many guide to buying PSU on the internet and i strongly suggest you look it up.
With any of the i series with use logical core ( Threads ) and real cores you will want to have that extra power. As for the 250GTS, I'd suggest you get more power.

Nvidia is releasing it's new FAILURE brand cards ( Jokes the 4xx Series ) so you can look for something better than the 250GTS. Not saying don't buy one, their great cards and if you want to stay close to 600 of what ever you're currency, get a 250 GTS.

Thats my 2 sense for the day

Your 9800GT/8800GT argument is invalided with current 9800GT's, the first batch used the G92a (8800GT GPU) which was 65nm, but the current ones, use less power and also use the G92b 55nm.
Manufactures Site wrote:8800 GT = G92-270-A2 at 330mm2 die size

9800 GT = G92-280-B1 at 270mm2 die size
And the watts of the PSU aren't the main factor, because you could use a High End (Cosair) 450W psu to do the work of a Cheap 600W PSU most of the time, just because the rails push out more amps.

and bravo for the 1 month bump :)
