PR freezes the PC?

Post by DeaR.DeviL »

Hello!

Me and a mate was playing PR yesterday and after 1.5h or so both of our's pc froze.
Just hit the reboot bottom. I joined the server again and after like 1 hour same thing the game just random froze, I rebooted and joined. Same thing happed again but this just after a few min on the server.
The first two crashes occurred at Fallujah West and the second very early came at Ramiel.

Since me and my mate had exact the same "failure" I hardy think this is a hardware problem. I posted this problem at another from (Skyttegrav.se • Portal) and it seems like more people have the same issue.

Hardware specifications:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
Memory: OCZ 4096MB RAM @ 1066MHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS4
Hard Drive: Western Digital VelociRaptor WD1500HLFS 150GB 10000rpm 16MB SATA2
Video Card: Nvidia GTX 260
Sound Card: Realtek HD Audio output
Operating System: Windows 7
Monitor: Asus VW222U 22" Wide TFT
Speakers/Headphones: Fatal1ty gaming headset
Keyboard: Logitech G11
Mouse: Logitech G5v2
Mouse Surface: Steelseries
Computer Case: Antec P193

Someone have a solution or help me and my friend with this i would be very grateful!

If system overheat is completely ruled out, then it could have been server hang or some kind of driver issue. Have you checked Windows Event Logs for any error messages?

This is all i can find that would be related to BF2/PR
this is the time of the crashes

Code: Select all

	2010-05-26 21:50:50	Kernel-Power	41	(63)
	2010-05-26 21:41:50	Kernel-Power	41	(63)
	2010-05-26 20:10:56	Kernel-Power	41	(63)
A guy i talked to had the same problem as me, he thinks it's the drivers. But i have the same drivers that worked from him (not same card however).

That event id 41 means:
"The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
Thus its a result of your reset button press.

Usually hangs that cannot be solved without pressing reset are caused by device drivers as they are only pieces of software that run in kernel space of Windows operating system. And that's the only place where failures can have such a catastrophic consequences. Sound, video and game controller drivers are, I think, the most common root causes.

Another possible reason could be game itself or DirectX, because games run in DirectX Full Screen Exclusive mode, which mean that no other application is allowed to draw to the screen. So if the application that run in exclusive mode hangs, Windows itself is still running fine, but it has no means of communicating with the user. If there is no second computer available that could be used to remotely control the unresponsive system and kill the hung process, the only way to get the system back in order is hard reset.

So, re-check all your drivers, espceially those somehow involved with gaming or multimedia, install all the updates from Windows Update and install the latest DirecX update:
Download details: DirectX Redist (February 2010)

The DirectX might worked. I did install the DirectX but the problem still remained so i looked for another driver and I found the same version that i had 197.45, but this new driver was 25MB bigger for some reason. After that install and a re installation of PR i think it worked i played for 2-3h without crash.

Thanks for all help!

I get the same thing. It can happen any time. I might play for an hour and have it or for 10 minutes. I sometimes think it is on some maps more than others but maybe that is incorrect. I have tried everything and am about to give up and accept it as an inherant problem with the game and windows 7-64. I only does it when in the PR game not in regular windows apps etc. Sometimes it causes a blue screen mem dump and sometimes just freezes with a buzzing noise. I am running a Asus PT6/Core I-7 920 6 Gig ram nvidia GTS 250.

As of this thread:
https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f200-p ... ockup.html (which is now locked)

and my thread https://www.realitymod.com/forum/f27-pr ... ost1367079

I have exactly those symptoms, i play for random amounts of time, game is running very smoothe and then all of a sudden, it freezes, looping last few seconds of sound, alt + tab etc do nothing and all i can do is a system reset, this is EXTREMELY annoying.

My system specs:
Intel core 2 quad Q8200 running @ 3ghz.
4GB DDR2-1000 GSKILL Ram.
IceQ 4 turbo Radeon HD4850 512mb.
Asus P5Q motherboard.

What i have tried to fix:
  • Reinstall of graphics drivers.
  • Changing ingame graphic settings alot.
  • Tried every possible setting of audio ingame.
  • Tried uninstalling soundcard and using onboard.
  • Tried returning my CPU to stock clock settings.
  • Tried reinstalling BF2 and PR nice and clean reinstall.
  • Tried reinstalling sound card with new drivers.
  • Reconnecting every cord inside.
  • Reconnecting every component inside.

Probably some other stuff i have not remembered as well.

I will try to reinstall Windows 7 on a new hard drive soon.

Any one have experience with this kind of problem?

I have to report that I'm experiencing the same kind of problem myself.

So far it occured on two different maps: Muttrah City and Kokan. I had no problems playing on Jabal Al Burj and Operation Archer.

Usualy my computer froze after about 30 minutes of gameplay, but the second time playing Kokan it happened just a couple of minutes after joining the server (PRTA server).

My computer :

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
ATI Radeon HD4870 512MB
4GB RAM
Gigabyte GA-X38-DS4

I have already tried updating my video card drivers, but the problem is still here. Besides I have installed DirectX 11 quite awhile ago so I can't try updating DirectX 9.0.

I also noticed that in 2 out of 4 cases my PR settings were back to default settings (video, audio, controls, ...), probably because of safe mode for BF2.

DPC Latency Checker
try this
if you have red spikes, its your pc.

i tried following:
1. open the system controls of win7
2. go to the energy saving settings
3. enable maximal power energy saving plan

if that doesnt help get an amd motherboard + amd cpu.

I've had the same problem. Posted about it several times.

Some are calming it can be caused by overheating. I haven't measured my temperatures, but it can be something to look into. Others are claiming it's caused by x-fi sound card, but you just proved them wrong.

I get this problem mostly on Yamalia, it happens almost every time, but sometimes it happens on other maps too, like Quai and Fallujha.

When I think about it, it hasn't happened lately, and I turned down textures from high to medium. Are you running it on high? BTW running Vista and other specs in profile.

I am having the exact same problems. I think we can rule out anyone's hardware as the culprit because it happened on my laptop (which used to run PR just fine, got a new hard drive for it when CivV killed the old one, same problem persisted with PR. I just got a brand new gaming rig that, to put it simply, is overpowered for PR. After struggling to get BF2 to install (the original CD didn't like Win7x64 so I downloaded a crack), I got everything going and after an hour or so playing, same old freeze. I'm sure if I went back on it'd freeze in 10-20 minutes, just like before. So I have a hard time believing it's my 1 day old computer that has everything updated on it (drivers and such).

BF2 only warns that it hasn't been tested on x64 systems but you can still install it. It actually worked quite well for me except for the voip installer.

PCs are being delivered with defects. So unless you had that pc for >1 month without any problems except for with BF2 I am quite declined to agree with you.

as to the problem:
It has been mentioned before but temperatues and Event Viewer is definitly something you guys should be looking into.

Listing all your specs (including perepherial devices - esp. USB ones) is adviced.

It's not illegal if I already paid for a copy. It's not my fault the CD won't work. Nothing illegal about downloading a copy and using my CD key.

Yeah, I noticed that problem too. It wouldn't recognize my mic (which sucks anyway, to the point where it barely picks up any sound when I put it in my mouth! :? ??: )

First of all, it's a custom build. Second of all, I've played other games already (for hours at a time... it was a long weekend), like Civ 5 and CoD:World at War with the settings maxed out, zero problems. So no, it's definitely not my computer.
[R-COM]SnipingCoward wrote:as to the problem:

Again, I think playing those other games with the settings maxed out proves that it can't be a hardware problem.

Processor:Intel Core i5 [email protected]
Graphics:GTX460 SuperClocked EE D5 1GB, 763MHz
RAM: DDR3 4G PC3-12800, 1.6GHz

As for peripherals, aside from the standard mouse and keyboard, I have an external hard drive. Any other specs you might need?

As for the problem, my guess is that it might have something to do with the patches (1.41 and 1.5) or the PR download itself. I'm going to try downloading all of these things again, then reinstalling everything and see what I get. This problems is really confusing considering plenty of people are having it, but then plenty of other people are having no trouble at all with basically the same gear.

Maybe this will prompt the team to come out with the next patch a little sooner? Huh! :-D

EDIT: So I uninstalled everything, deleted everything (including the patches), then downloaded them again and installed everything again. I installed BF2 just fine, along with the patches, and played it for a bit to make sure it was working. I restarted my computer after installing each part. Then I installed PR. I restarted again. Now neither BF2 nor PR will start. They immediately stop responding after starting them up. I've tried running them as administrator and also in compatibility mode, but no dice. The first time I installed PR on my old computer it did this same thing for PR, and I fixed it by simply playing BF2 so that PR could get the client info. But now I can't even start BF2, so that's not an option.

EDIT2: I figured out how to get PR to work. 25 minutes into playing with literally nothing going on, the game freezes my computer, just like it was before. So with new copies of everything on a brand new computer that can handle it no problem, this game is still causing freezes. For those suggesting it's a heat problem, my CPU was at 45C at the time. So I have no idea what to do now except wait for the next patch and hope it's not as fucked up as this one seems to be.
