They had a cannon mounted to one of the wings of the plane and would dive straight towards the target area and release 2-4 canisters of white phosphorous smoke. This would be the most dangerous part of the FAC's mission because they would be flying low and slow. A plane could not land in the jungles of Vietnam behind enemy lines to throw smoke at them and take off, if that is what you were saying.

smoke grenades where used by the friendly infantry to mark their positions for the F.A.C to help identify the friendlys and so the commander on the ground can help the fac identify the target.
the commander on the ground would pop a colour and the FAC would identify the colour and the commander would confirm that colour was correct. it was done this way so if the enemy was listening some how and the fac said pop yellow the nva could do likewise.

this procedure i have seen in a video the other day from athganistan, when some helicopters arrived overhead dureing a firefight with taliban. the canadian guuner threw a green smoke grenade to his right to avoid friendly fire and so the helicopters can see the canadian line.
