Why civies are not allowed to swim?

Post by bad_nade »

Because the bug thread about this issue got closed without any explanation, I would like to bring this feature into more open conversation.

AFAIK civies were originally banned from going to water because there was no tools for arresing a swimming civilian. But today we have rifleman specialist's shotgun which is capable of remote arresting insurgents from several tens of meters away. So why water is still off-limits? It has only negative effects to popularity and usefulness of this kit and it should be fixed.

The shotgun's range is limited so civies should still not be able to stay in water for extended periods.

Anyway, it isn't like it does extreme amounts of damage, as a civie you're still able to swim across rivers and not die, and if it is serious just heal yourself afterwards.

I think civis should be able to swim as much as they want. It's much more realistic than if a soldier got in the water and was able to stay afloat with all of his gear. I'd suggest that civis would just be able to get shot at if they're in the water.

Uh... no. If you've been shooting civies for using their med-pack, your team must really not like you as using a med-kit is no longer grounds for shooting a civie.

Anyone here played as a civi yet? Or are you just basing this off your own assumptions?

Civi's have nearly 0 water time, I mean you couldn't even get from one side of the river to the other on Al Basrah last time I played.

There's a few seconds of delay before it kicks in. After that, though, it's pretty serious.

The reason it's there is because you could sit out of range of shotguns in the water until they pass with no consequence. Unfortunately, BF2 doesn't let us give civis what-for when we're both in water, so we make them drown mercilessly.

If a civi is willing to swim far enough to be safe from shotguns he might as well stay there. It takes time to swim that far and while swimming he is utterly useless to his team. It's just one medic & grappling hook off the field from defending caches.

The original reason for the water damage has cease to exist a long time ago, as civies are no longer safe in the small rivers near Al Basrah's east village. That's why water damage should be removed too.

And yet, the civi can still report contacts to his team, as well as distract the coalition forces. So no, he's not utterly useless. You only have to swim out +25m. and just swim about. Bullets don't penetrate water even slightly in BF2, and backstrokes toward the enemy make you such a small target that even the shotgun has a hard time scoring a hit at 30m. And the civi can still report contacts over mumble, or team chat. And then when they grow tired of trying to deal with Mr. Fishcivi (or if they ignore him completely), he can swim back to shore and do as he pleases.

It doesn't affect gameplay that much with it there, and makes the civi rely more on a protector and using land routes.

wait...water damages civilians?
that is pretty bad. The shotgun is POWERFUL. I have been one shotted by that thing at a decent distance.
The specialist kit is WAY to powerful I think. Need to get rid of the grenades they have at least.
half of the people running around are specialists now, cause they can still nade spam, and get a decent rifle. Not to mention a very powerful shotgun.

Why civies not faster than equipped soldiers?
