Global Chat removal option

Post by drs79 »

Is this a possibility within the mod or is the chat function a hard-coded part of BF2?

Only reason why I ask is two fold:

Realism function: In reality I wouldn't yell to my enemies that the cobra failed or discuss during battle how to properly de-bone a duck a la Julia Child.

In-Game function: Erases taunting, smack talking, and keeps the game between the two sides.

With Teamspeak, and Mumble as additional Third Party communication options, and with admins for the most part on both sides during games is there really a need for global chat?

i always joke about the DEVs unbinding the j key and removing its functionality.

I think it'd be all or nothing as they have already limited the clientside options (like map transparency [sp]), but as an option i don't think it'd be workable, ofc i could be horribly wrong

it does pain me when you see lots and lots of pointless red scrawl across the game and it can be frustrating. They'll probably be a lot against this but i wouldn't mind the option to be there, it can be something that really grinds my gears.

how so?

dunno how some do it but TG that admins can read what is typed in squad chat, and using the !r function brings it to there attention.

It's called psychological warfare use it sometime.

Anyways back on topic. But what if you need to settle a dispute between people? What about reporting for a ban? What about if you want to play with a clan-mate who is on the other side? Some people don't have the computer power to run anything with PR.

i agree.
theres usual no need for chat between two players. i mean, you dont even know WHO killed you or WHO was killed by you.
so global chat is unnecessary.
enabling the !R function on all pr servers would make the players wants much more transparent and would filter out all the flame and off topic. furthermore it would make more room for team chat messages suc as contact reports or extraction requests.

how are they going to have dispute if they can't use global chat anyway? :p
What about reporting for a ban?
as i mentioned above an admin should be able to read all levels of chat, also wish people should stop reporting over global as it just causes the aurguments and spamming

you swap sides to play with them?

only times i'd miss the j key is in a community server where pretty much everyone knows everyone and the conversation is short and pleasant. Though this is unfortunately hardly ever the case from my experience, and ofc this is the internet

Personally, I don't find the chatting too distracting or aggravating in any sense. More often than not, I actually have a good time chatting with my foes about

I think that'd go a bit too far. Global chat is such a basic thing, I wouldn't want it removed. It indeed is a game after all. But then again, if it's optional and up to the server admins to turn on and off the global chat, it'd be fine.

If the Devs Removed Global Chat I would quit playing PR immediately. I hardly use it but to remove something so basic just to make people who maybe don't quite realize its just a game happy is ridiculous

I could go either way to be honest.

On one extreme, it can be very annoying to constantly see players typing insulting, childish remarks. It's quite sad and pathetic actually. I really only see it being abused on servers other than TG, whom make an effort to stop people from spamming/taunting needlessly.

On the other hand though, there's a lot of times where it comes in handy.

Meh.

I can see many up's and down's. I'd probably want to keep it though. I'll take any tips on how to cook Julia Child style =P

You get the Watch Your Language warning because it is automated...

My opinion is: keep the chat. Come one, they are actually fun sometimes.
Most issues I had, actually, were on the team chat.
All-chat issues are normally quickly taken care of by admins...

Guys, when a new player comes, just answer his question and go on your merry way, instead of going berserk! It's THAT simple! :D

Leave it up to the server admins.

On the aussie servers we get warned and kicked for excessive talking on allchat :p
