20 rd or 30 rd mags?

Post by Conman51 »

to my knowledge The US used 20 rd mags in the vietnam war for the m 16

but in films that i see and so far on the models that we have they use the 30 rd mags, so will the mod base the mags on like the era or what?

The M16A1's will probably use 20 Rnds
The XM116 (What was it?) Might use 30 Rnds

do you mean the carbine version of the m16 no that used the twenty round mags aswell as the thirty.
generaly as a rule infantry regiments both army and marines used twenty round mags
the navy seals had thirty round mags available though as did probably all other special units like lrrp's ect which had more say on their units outfitting.

The americans used 20rd mag in their m16s during the start of the Vietnam War, but I also remember to have read that the 30 rd mag was introdused during the 1970s and that they started to use the mags in vietnam after 1970

I believe they do, but the 20 mag variant
perhaps the 30 mag version too in a late war map, but that's something for one of the later releases I guess

close its the 117 iirc the 116 is a small arms FCS

I beleived they used both 20 round and 30 round STANAG magazines in the XM117, preferably 30 round mag and posibly make it part of the speciallized kits and the officer kit.

the 30round mag was introduced towards the end of the war but it was not in full circulation if i recall. special forces all seemed to use the 30round mags at the end of the war though.

also the 20 round mag was iconic to the VN war so it should be there

the iron sight is replaced for the reflex on some maps.

Back on topic, i would like to see the 20 rd mag standard issue, but maybe on SOME maps that would have taken place later in the war we can see a few kits with the 30

Actually, it was called the Colt XM177, introduced in the late '60's. It was one of the earliest versions of the carbine models, known as the CAR-15 and eventually the M4 series. The XM177 might look similar to an M4, but they are pretty different. The most commonly visible identifier of the XM177 is the extended flash hider.

Colt was having problems with their early 30-rd magazines. They went through several design variations, but kept having problems feeding fully. If I remember correctly, the first production 30-rd was issued in '68-69, but they jammed like a mofo. In the mid-70's (I think 1975) they finally released a "decent" 30-rd magazine, but it was still plagued with problems and in very limited supply. Up until the later part of the war, mostly just the 5th SFG and some other units were using 30-rd mags.

If you're wondering what the generic infantryman carried, it was almost always the 20-rd steel mags. A lot of commanders apparently thought that continuing to issue the 20's even later on was good practice, as it "helped conserve ammo".

Trigger-happy hippies didn't seem to do well with a batch of 30-rounders.

The M14 and the M14A1 are what have me excited about PR Vietnam, that and of course the hueys.

Whether or not these will be issued to riflemen, we don't know. Of course they will be the sniper kit's primary weapon.

In the movie platoon they use 20 Rounds magazine. Maybe there will be maps set in different times with appropriate weapons, m14 at the start of the war and m16 on later maps.

According to guns in movies the 30rnd magazine is historically accurate for the portrayed time period in the vietnam war.
