Tank tactic real life vs PR

Post by charliegrs »

I was playing a round of Silent Eagle tonight, and me and my squad were holed up in the power plant for a while when a T90 came out of nowhere, and came right into the power plant and started driving around aimlessly looking for enemies {my squad} to pick off. Now if you dont know already, the power plant in Silent Eagle is ringed by walls, and the tank didnt stay outside and fire shells into it, it literally just drove in not knowing what to expect. I see this all the time in PR, and it makes me curious, does anyone know if this is what tanks do in real life? To me, it seems like in real life, tanks tend to stay on the outside of a compound area, and fire into it. Now Im in no way a military expert, so maybe the way people do it in PR is realistic. However I would be surprised if that were the case, I would think driving into an area with all kinds of hiding spots for infantry with AT weapons would be suicide for a tank. Its been bugging me somewhat for a while, because it just LOOKS unrealistic.

I think one of the reasons that this happens is that infantry rarely pose a threat to heavy armor in PR. There are *possibly* two HAT kits in play with the other team (If someone has made love with the family dog, four.)
While HAT kits do pose a serious threat to heavy assets, I find that they are most effective at long ranges where they can be visually tracked more easily without disturbing the dreaded deviation parentheses -- close range fire upon a speeding tank may often result in a miss.

well when I'm driving a tank ingame I dont go somewhere where there is AT or TOWs. But you didn't have HAT or TOWs? thus he took advantage.

Tanks will often be rolling around with infantry support. Then again, in real life there aren't flags or points of capture, nor 32 people participating in a war.

From what I know, in reality the tank would be grouped up with a minimum of 3 tanks and each would be covering different areas while the infantry which are supporting the tanks, and vice versa, move in to clear out the area. Or on the flipside, they call in air support.

The only way that armor movements can be properly used is in vehicle warfare, and even then the only tactic that is effective is three or more tanks in a straight line, so they can easily fire one or more tows at the same target before either one gets damaged.

In addition to the above, I'd like to point out that if your squad had a TOW up, that tank would have been no threat :)

And with all the whingers in the 'Comprehensive TOW feedback' thread, you'd think tanks would take a more cautious approach to somewhere like that, but no... let's rather nerf the TOW so we can go gallivanting about with not a care in the world :-P

No, that's not what we're trained to do. Armor's job is to advance to contact, secure the area, and wait for squishies to clear it out. Tanks move in to provide fire support as needed. We're specifically instructed not to drive around on our own, and to be honest the idea never comes up much, as you're always operating in at least a section of 2 tanks, but usually a platoon.

We need a TOW warfare mode where all the kits only have shovels and radios, and you can only place TOWs without the need for crates :p

My main beef with the TOW is that I can spin it as fast as a skateboard wheel so I don't get shot, and I can shoot down fast moving choppers.

When I roll in mechanized I tell my squad of 3 vehicles to stay close. Do not run off on your own, do not go into compounds. Support inf when in MBTs, only hunt MBTs with Brads or BMP-3s. As a tank/supporting APC stay behind inf and support.

Tank tactics in PR: lolololol, these choppers are not scary, i can shoot them down with my cannon.

Tank tactics in RL: Hmm, I think I'll sit here and gather dust in the base.

Actually modern tanks are WAY good at shooting down choppers with the main gun, especially the Leopard Tank.

As for tank tactics, if you are fighting around a city or need to move up a street where you expect ambush, you need infantery to move in ahead of you to draw out the enemy, or move left and right of the road to engage AT teams.

Slow moving ones, which would have landed, not Lynx's speeding away at a parallel angle going 150 km/h.

Same goes for TOWs.

A tactic used used in RL is that one tank moves up while the other is stationary and possibly in cover(By cover preferably in the Hull-down position), covering the moving tank this way the moving tank isnt a stable firing platform while the one that is stationary is (obviously SOTA FCS makes this obsolete[PR has no FCS]), then when the moving tank has moved 1000-1800m ahead of the stationary tank it will try to find cover and cover the front and the back and sides of the moving tank, if you cant find cover then tough.

tactics like this may work in PR:A2

however this is for open(ish) ground

You also have to remember that RL HE shells put large holes in said structures.

IRL there are also limitations on some AT weapons preventing them being fired indoors

Besides, this is still just a game and not all RL tactics can be used here. Being constantly in move makes you difficult target for the enemy, maybe that was the reason.

If you could blow walls and things up in BF2/PR there wouldn't be any need for going into CQB with the tanks. And like said, movement makes you a harder target.
