Mouse and keyboard.
I can't stand flying helicopters with a joystick, especially the throttle control.
Jets on the other hand I don't mind, except for strafing.

I have a joystick and I fly with mouse + keyboard
My joystick power is set around 10-15% for helicopter and I don't touch anything else
And when you want to land, you just don't have to hold the S Key

For helicopters, mouse and keyboard all the way.
For jets, joystick when flying and mouse for strafing.

Re: Helicopters
I got a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro two years ago (very nice joystick, and cheap; like $30-40) and I used it to fly jets only, but people kept persuading me to use the joystick for helicopters too.
I was resistant at first, since I was used to flying the helos with a mouse and keyboard, but I practiced with the joystick for a while.
It took a long time, but I eventually realized that the joystick just worked better with me for the helicopters. More control, smoother turns and evasive maneuvers (flips, barrel rolls) and easier navigation of a landing zone before setting down.
It's all about personal preference, and using the mouse and keyboard for choppers can be just as effective, but if you have a good joystick but don't use it for choppers, I highly recommend trying it out; it gives you far more freedom of movement than you might think.

Re: Helicopters
I have an old joystick the Pitch commands don't respond. I can turn while taxiing in a jet, but I can't take off. So I'm sticking with keyboard+ mouse.
(I only flew back in Training and now sometimes COOP mode anyway)

Re: Helicopters
I use the keyboard exclusively. (Arrow and WSAD keys) I'm not one to brag but I'm defiantly not a noob pilot.
What I can't stand with flying is that you can be a f**king pro at it and when you crash/shot down. (and it happens to the best of us) Everyone always says you suck. /rant
But yeah, Keyboard/Mouse is your best bet.

Always used the keyboard only. Never used the mouse for any aircraft except to look around.

Re: Helicopters
This could almost do with a poll. See if anyone flies with mouse only (using side/scroll buttons for throttle/rudder), or uses an Xbox/PS style controller.
Yep, one of the unfortunate traits of the PR community.havoc1482 wrote:What I can't stand with flying is that you can be a f**king pro at it and when you crash/shot down. (and it happens to the best of us) Everyone always says you suck. /rant

Keyboard only, feel like I have better control over the chopper than with keyboard and mouse.

But yea, Joystick makes me feel all warm and gooey inside. I like the warm and gooey sensation, and thus fore I use joystick on Hueys, Apaches, and havoks.
Everything else is too touchy for the eloquence of the joystick, so I am forced to resort to barbarian means to fly the LB, BH, Cow, etc. (mouse).
I don't use arrow keys because I find them less appealing than a dead salmon in a wooden mug filled with mud-AIDs frothy water with a heaping plate of poor hiker's feet. Strictly in my own opinion, of course.
