Distant Gunfire and Explosion Sound Effects
I remember my first time playing PR thinking "This is AWESOME!"
But it wasn't the aspect of teamwork and gameplay that was the most awe-inspiring feature in the beginning being in a squad with little or no communication and having no idea what I was supposed to do. I hadn't even read the manual!
It was the immersion of the new game that struck me the most. The 2 km map of Operation Archer seemed huge especially when I had spawned as Taliban in the middle nowhere. As I heard the first bursts of an LMG and a couple of explosions echoing in the distance I knew this was the game for me. Then I heard a loud crack and I was dead..
Anyway, listening to the sounds of battle from a distance today doesn't give me the same feeling as before. Maybe I've just gotten used to them but they only sound like guns to me because I know they are guns. Hearing the the real sounds of battle instead of some looped track of gunfire in the background is a major part of gameplay and immersion in PR and I wish that the sound effects were more realistic and of the same or why not even better quality as the mod otherwise is.
My question is has there been some change to the sound effects (after version 0.85 or close to that) and does anyone else feel the same way as I do?

PR doesn't feature this looked track, all gun sounds etc are human/bot createdHearing the the real sounds of battle instead of some looped track of gunfire in the background

Re: Distant Gunfire and Explosion Sound Effects
could you give a more specific improvement to ingame sounds 'higher quality' or 'more realistic' is rather ambiguous
louder? quieter? carry over longer distances? more bass, less bass what?

Searched for gameplay vids from previous versions and in this one the sounds do sound a bit better imho even though there's always room for improvement.. Maybe it's the longer echo or something, can't really tell.

I think the 0.917 is good. But is there a difference, where is that dual video thing?

Almost sounds like the OP has just lost his wanderlust and become a battle-hardened veteran, unable to flinch when a 60mm lands half a metre away.
Course what do I know, I've been playing since 0.917

You're correct sir. The distant sounds were changed from 0.85 to 0.9. I spent a lot of time working on them. If my comp was actually working I'd upload some comparisons for you as a reward for your astute observation
They're also subject to change in the future, we'll keep working on improving the PR audio experience.

I'm very glad to hear that! Also thank you for the kind of response I was looking for[R-DEV]Jaymz wrote:You're correct sir. The distant sounds were changed from 0.85 to 0.9. Of course the sounds would vary in different environments IRL but that's not possible to achieve in PR due to engine limitations I suppose... A little longer echo and some juiciness to the sound to suite my taste.

What i'd like to hear is the sound effect on the IDFs Negev LMG applied to other weapons, it's so awesome that it echoes after firing.

I think the sounds are quite good. They could be tweaked a bit with more juice as said before, but what do i know, never been in a real firefight.

well the old sounds...were just more badass
Seriously I liked them better (no offense this is just my personal experience) in the old ver. when the gunfights in the distance would sound way stronger.

Hopefully in the next version the sounds will be even better than the old onesCroCop wrote:well the old sounds...were just more badass

Can't say that I'd have heard a lot of guns being fired from close range since I haven't served my time in the military yet.. (Next year)
I spend a lot of time at our sommer cottage though and it's a few kilometers away from an army training area. One can hear gunfire and dull echoes of explosions occasionally in there. Maybe that's where my passion to these sounds comes from anyway!

Warch US army and marine combat footage on youtube or metacafe, those vids have usually poor quality picture but great sounds.splatters wrote:Hopefully in the next version the sounds will be even better than the old ones
