I was watching this video: YouTube - Project Reality - then and now and since I only joined PR in v0.85, I didn't know much of the old maps...I was wondering why some of these are not in place anymore because some of them look pretty bad-a**. (I didn't know if we're allowed to cuss on this forum.)

Re: Why?
Many of them were removed for a variety of reasons. Ever notice some maps in game today that are rarely played? Some of the removed maps were those abandoned unused maps for prolonged periods of time. Some were simply too primitive. By that I mean, they didn't evolve as fast as PR gameplay did. The map styles didn't suit what the DEVs were hoping to achieve with the mod at the time. There are, like I said, many reasons. I agree, I started playing just before .85 and I wish I could have seen some of the older maps.

Re: Why?
Why did you choose a non-descriptive title for your thread?
As PR gameplay evolves, some maps get phased out because they no longer support changes the developers are leaning towards. That and the fact that over time, some of the old maps get replaced by bigger and better* ones.
* Note: Not everyone may agree with said statement.

Re: Why?
Why.... Can't people think of better forum topic titles than one single common word that dosen't describe anything about the topic itself and make the user look like they only have a single brain cell?
I would answer your question but because of the lack of a good title I wont and the question has been answered 100001 times on this forum already if you would just use the search function which I'm sure if you searched for something better than "Why?" you would find it....

Easy there Rhino it will be ok lol. Yeah man just to promote your thread better and help people understand for future threads you make try to have a title more than just 1 more and at least somewhat descriptive.[R-DEV]Rhino wrote:Why.... As it was said this has been discussed several times and I remember seeing a thread a week or two ago on this very subject. Basically what Savage and Hawkeye said various reasons-concepts that developers implimented that the maps became outdated for, to be honest I only somewhat played .87 and been a heavy .9 player and before that only brief instances of playing PR so I would of liked to see the old maps more but its not the end either the developers or possibly more likely the community can update a few of the old maps that were good and maybe only a little outside the standards of PR nowdays, so its not the end. For a handfull though its unlikely we will ever see EVERY map come back for the sheer sake of content and just some are much to old and would take far to much work etc
Off the top of my head heres a few I looked into that may be able to be polished up and brought back:
Sunset City (was in last version had a few flaws I remember but probably one of the most recent of removed maps work would be minimal to moderate)
Ghost Train- Was popular it seems in old versions would be nice for a revive but seemed to have some concerning issues?
Bi Ming- One of the best maps to come back in my opinion another recent removal need another GB vs PLA to balance NATO vs opforce, if any reason just a great map with the terrain
Assault on Mestia- Again recently removed may come back and removed for space reasons?
Whatever the MEC vs US Army oil fields map was just had a great tone
Theres a good list of some previous maps that have potential to come back and very well may if community mappers can have a go. However don't take my opinion for anything too trusting though I didn't play many of those maps much most vaugely or not at all so a lot of my assestments is what I remember or have seen in vids etc so possibly people with experience on those maps may confirm.
Hope this helps

Re: Why?
Current 1km maps I can think of (Asad Khal, Korengal and one of the IDS vs Hamas coast maps) have many more buildings which can be entered (or difficult terrain navigation with Korengal) which makes them play completely different from the removed 1km maps and Al Kufrah oil fields. Ghost, Bi Ming and Mesita do not have the vegitation that renders at the distances PR now plays at. Kashan (while not related to Al Kufrah to my knowledge) would be an example of how Al Kufrah would need to be scaled up.Lange wrote:Off the top of my head heres a few I looked into that may be able to be polished up and brought back:

While I've loved all of those maps, they would require a lot of work to update them and they would still be way too small for PR with their current layouts. Fool's Road followed Assault on Mestia and increased the map to 2km, so it would be an example of how much the other maps would need to be changed to meet current PR game play (basically remade from scratch).
