What about just having the vehicle only repair if there is noone in it? It would give the same result.
I don't think Abrams crewmen are qualified to repair the vehicle from a tank round anyway. Right?

It would also encourage people to disarm mines when they get a crewmen kit with a wrench, because if you want to do it now the insurgents will get them if you die, and then your armor is doomed.
