I'm new - need help (maybe a clan?)

Hello,

I have been playing AAO2 for 7 years now but the game is about to close I think.
Anyway I saw this amaizng mod for BF2 and bought a copy.

I tried playing just now but I didn't really understnad what to do. Ran around in the desert killed like 2 people and that was it.

I'm a good tactician and a good FPS player but I can't seem to understand what to do ingame.

Is that someone who can help me? maybe a squad or clan that will adopt me?

I'm IDF retired so tactics is right up my ally.

If AAO2 is America's Army then PR is nothing like it.

I suggest you read the manual that was installed together with PR.

If you haven't done it, read the manual from cover to cover a couple of times. Some game mechanics in PR can be a bit difficult to understand at first.

However, the best way to learn is to just join an Infantry squad and follow the squad leaders orders.
Always say you're new, and hopefully your squad members will help you out.
Take on the role of a standard rifleman at first, since automatic rifleman and medic kits and the like can be a bit more difficult to use.
If everyone in the squad is completely separated from each other and the squad leader gives no orders whatsoever, just join another squad.

Servers I would strongly recommend playing on as a new player include: Alpha Project, Tactical Gamer, NwA UK Reality.

Before reading the PR manual, you might want to play one or two rounds of regular BF2, as the PR manaul expects the reader to have played BF2 already at some parts.

Otherwise, you should indeed just join an infantry squad with a promising name (like including words like "teamwork" "tw" "tactics" "VoIP" or stuff like that) and tell them you're new, they'll brief you. Stick with infantry for the start, that's easiest.

I would suggest learning about how to play the game before looking for a clan, your best bet would be to find someone from the forums as a battle buddy and play with them until you are comfortable and want to take it to the next level with a clan.

* Read the manual.
* Don't join a clan.
* Try to play realistically.
* Don't insult others, trash talk etc.
* Try to work with the team, not JUST your squad.
* Download, install and use mumble. Some servers use mumble over others, once you get it set up you will notice which ones. Mumble Voice Program in Project Reality - Project Reality Forums
* Certain servers have better game play and admin stuff than others. You will find this out as well.
* Don't let a few bad rounds discourage you from continuing to play PR.
* KDR means nothing in this game - so don't worry about it.

I think you guys got the wrong idea that I'm a n00b at tactics and realistic game play. I'm a veteran FPS and Teamwork player. In AA I was one of the commanders of a highly realistic, tactical and teamworking unit, and for a very long time. We did some amamzing stuff. I know all about how to play realistically and tactically.

- I don't intend on reading the manual.
- I don't want to play on random public servers
- I'm a pretty quick learner and would like to learn as I go.

I played a little like you said and I understood that if you aren't with a bunch of players that make a plan and perform it - there is nothing to do in PR mode - like in any other Tactical Shooter.

I want to join a clan that would teach me the "how tos". Is there such a beast?

No, you don't get it; without reading the manual, you miss a whole heckuvalot of things that are needed. A lot of times clans in their servers will say to newer players "Go RTFM" (Read the -effing- manual). I tried doing what you did after getting it ... realized I needed to "go RTFM."

If you rather learn as you go, join an infantry squad and ask them what to do. You might find nice people whos clan you might want to join. Of course everyone here could recommend their own clan to you now, but I don't know how helpful that really would be.

You should still read at least the first few chapters of the manual though, it isn't Descartes Meditationes or something and won't take you more than a couple of minutes to skip through.

I gotta say, you're not starting off well. You asked for advice, people gave it to you (the manual) and you decide to throw that back in their face.

Whatever or however good you think you are as a tactician or FPS player, PR is a different beast and to understand what's going on, you need to at least view the basic introductions from the manual. Also, 'random public servers' are all you really get, clans don't generally have 64+ always ready to populate their server.

Once you've read the manual and understand the gameplay mechanics behind AAS, Insurgency, VW, CNC, you just need to familiarize yourself with:
- The deviation system
- Being an effective squad member
- The kit system

After that, you're pretty much at the level of 60-80% of PR players. The other 20% are the ones who've been playing for yonks and SL, tank, transport, chopper etc effectively.

Let's not start flaming him guys, we can't force him to read the manual, and I'm sure some of us didn't read it either when we first started.

It is possible without the manual - the manual simply sums up everything you'd otherwise be told here on the forums or "on the fly" on a server. The biggest clan-like thing you're going to find is probably the Project Reality Tournament, but you'd probably need some experience first. Starting off with a clan might be one way, another might be just talking to one of us and asking us to guide you through the game on a public server (a few people offered you that already; I can't help you this way at the moment because my PC won't handle PR anymore and that Dell thing I ordered half a year ago still isn't here).

So thats how..." or "oh, ok I get it now." Who reads the manual of a game they just bought? No one. You just want to jump in and start playing.

But, unlike most games, this game's manual is pretty important so you may want to at least glance over it.

I do. Why wouldn't anyone? What else are you going to do while you are still downloading or installing a game? Also, considering manuals tell you the controls for every game they come with I'd say it's pretty friggin' important to read it. When I downloaded Project Reality I read it cover to cover, for every version I downloaded too.

but if you are set on joining a clan then just do that as that would server your own purpose

Most games have tuts on the beginning and its not hard to understand, but PR can be tricky in the beginning and the manual is not filled with **** its filled with description of how every important thing works. Like how to get in a vehicle, deploy fob, what AASv2 or v3 is what Insurgency is etc..


BTW: PR is mostly a pub game an I doubt there are clans big enough except maybe TG with its member(and supporters) to fill a 64 player server.

You always have the PR tournament that may fit, but then again should have played PR and atleast know the basic to join as its not really a place to ask what the shovel is for etc.

The PR community is a mixture of PUB Players and semi-organised clans and some very organised heading towards mil-sim clans!!

You will get a very good idea as to the nature of the game and the community by playing a few rounds on
various servers.

With regards to clans, I can only comment on my own and other experiences that I have had;
We fit into the 'semi-organised' bracket. We have an active PR player count of around 25 and
with this we are able to scrim against other clans in 'friendly' events every few weeks.

For these events we carry out planning and deployment training, and then look to fill any gaps
in player knowledge at these times. Just by playing alongside a clan like ours you should get
a very quick all round general knowledge of the game. BUT, I really would not join a clan until
you get a feel for how you would fit within it. And whether or not the game is actually for you.

The community is on the whole very friendly, despite how some of the posts sound. There are
some particularly bespoke mechanics to PR that give it a teamwork bias. So I would advise
you at least skim the manual before you ask questions about what most of us now take for granted.

You will get the response you need to advance in PR, however it does take a little respect
from new players towards all the hard work that the DEVS as well as the community have put in
over the past 5 years or so.

It is time for you to RTFM (it helps a lot).

A good way to find people to teach you is to get on a public clan server and join the squad consisting of members from that clan. They may help you, or tell you to RTFM.

Dude, just read the manual EVEN if you're a nam veteran, lol. You'll understand later and give same advice to new players to come.
