But getting rid of tracers also makes ballistics 100% possible.

Very very very large added bonus.
I'm for this then. Make gun fights harder ^_^

Meh, they look cool, and they make it so that you aren't completely F***ed as you can see where they come from.

I agree to this - kind of. I don't like how some kits get tracers (Not like I can remember if I've noticed tracers on these) Medics, Officers, and Snipers should not have tracers because they are more important and if an Officer was firing and he had no tracers his position could not be tracked, same for medic. But on the other hand if a officer of medic was firing and the enemy saw that no tracers were coming from that position it would be known that a medic or officer was there. A sniper doesn't have to worry about seeing his shot because his spotter will see where it goes and inform the sniper.

lol, officers use tracers to point out targets for their fireteam, would be a bad idea, not to give them tracers

If I remember one MA correctly, they would load tracers as such; the top 3 for marking targets, every forth round, then the last three for a empty mag indication.

aha, found it!

also a thread about tracers, just not regarding gameplay

I think removing them completely would be terrible because if some engaged you from the sides/back from a relatively far distance, and you didn't see where they engaged you from, you're completely f***ed.

You still have

A) Sound to go by.
B) Binos/some optics to scan for them
C) Logical position of enemy troops on said map.(Informed Idea)

A) Sometimes it's hard to tell
B) If they're engaging from pretty far away from cover, they have the advantage so you're going to run to cover, not stand there and scan with your binos.
C) I would think in my scenario, you wouldn't be running past them or in front of them if you knew where they were.

I'm just saying it would kind of make game-play pretty annoying if it just seemed like snipers everywhere.

Id agree, i cant remember the last time i used enemy tracers to see the enemy position. A quick scan/sound normally picks em up as people stand out alot from the terrain/buildings in bf2 i find.

So you say the tracers should stay in, not because they are good to point out targets to anyone you are not in the same squad with, or because you can see where you are shooting(but its not that big of a help in PR), but because the enemy you are firing at would have a harder job finding YOU if the tracers were taken out?

Besides why would we want to take away the situational advantage of the engaging squad? I think no tracers would encourage more manoeuvring and scouting ahead( and I don't mean a 2 man leet sniper fire-team, but occasionally getting out the binoculars, or sweep with optics before moving in).

I am all for taking out the tracers(if it excludes mbts, apcs, ifvs), it should be interesting.

Exactly, plus we can get ballistics then...

yeah we get ballistics if tracers are taken out and if we add pure tracers to heavy guns then we can have ballistics for them as well.

Be interesting to have a 'community test' version or something with ballistics to see how it plays.

I prefer to see tracers in the rifleman, officers, and all the regular squad member's classes. I just don't like the order in which they fire. As a Marine, I know that we usually put 3 or 4 tracers in our magazine's first so that while we fire, when we see tracers coming out of our rifle we know we're about to have to conduct a reload.

where is this posted? i was informed by a dev and it is well noted in these forums that ballistics for bf2 are NOT possible. This has always been a sore point with me because i think that a shooting game should have realistic ballistics.
Sacrificing tracers for ballistics i think would be more than acceptable to the whole community, and for those who would not want to see that happen i suggest another game.

Sorry I haven't been able to join the armed forces yet so I don't have any personal expierences on loading tracers, myself, someone I know, or otherwise.

Dude...Chill out. That was one scenario and reason that I said that was for tracers staying ingame...I'm not completely stupid and I do realize that's not the only scenario that they are useful in.

^Realism...i dont see the problem i do believe its possible to make it kit specific so i say take it away from riflemen, keep them for AR. officer is debatable as i would prefer proper ballistics over marking targets. and lets not forget we always have the 3d map markers.

i recall back in 0.85 or some time around then that it was possible to have proper ballistics. the only problem was that tracers were hard coded to drop 25%(?) faster than a regular round. once they used proper ballistics for regular rounds the tracers were all f*cked up. there was also a poll for it asking whether we wanted tracers or proper ballistics.

Information in the hands of a critical thinker is invaluable, information alone is simply dangerous.
