Question for AlphaLima (any mappers, actually)

Post by Pulaski »

Hey,

I've looked and looked and can't seem to find this CRITICAL piece of info. Maybe someone here has seen something about this somewhere?

Will it be possible to port over or convert existing BF1942 maps to BF2?

I've done several custom maps for BF1942 which I'd hate to "loose" and was hoping that I could use in BF2, but I have not seen anything to confirm this. Has anyone else? Is it too early to ask? Any "inside" info? :D

I hope there's a utility to import the height map into BF2 editor at least, I could live with that I suppose, then place new BF2 objects on the maps... hmmm....

Seeing as Alpha hasn't responded yet, even though hes the man who knows about such specifics. From what I've heard, it may be a possibility, but don't curse me into the firey mouth of a Hell Beast if I am incorrect. :?

From what I understand, it will be possible. Things to watch out for will be scale & texture alignment though.

Yup, heightmaps shouldn't be a problem, since many (if not all) of the official BF2 maps themselves were actually prototyped in BF1942 before being ported to BF2. Since the texturing system has been significantly upgraded you'll probably have to re-texture the terrain however. Statics won't port directly either (I don't believe), but there'll probably be some utilities popping up before long which will facilitate that process.

So that's at least some good news. Given the immense number of great maps made by the BF community, I do expect some manner of moving them over to BF2.

As for BF1942 objects, other than the push for new things, I really don't see a reason why those objects, such as 'suburbhouse_1_m1' as seen in Alpha_Lima's sig, wouldn't be portable? After all, it's an SM file and textures. All the pieces are there, so hopefully, the BF2 engine does not depart from these 'base' settings too much.

How cool would it be to re-live 'Coastal Hammer' in BF2? :D :D

Keeping the hope alive,

I wonder how many El Alamein clones we'll have within a week?

Ha, that would definitely be cool, though I'd prefer to do something like a Coastal Hammer II with a better-optimized layout.

We have been reviewing possible map ideas that involve realistic scenario's. Combined with the mapping talent of Alpha_Lima, it is certain that Project Reality will be accompanied by an outstanding map pack :)
